See you at the movies!

At a reception held on Feb. 2 at the Arlington Town Hall, Arlington International Film Festival (AIFF) organizers celebrated the winning entries to their second annual poster contest. In total, AIFF’s four judges surveyed 50 poster entries from students at Arlington High School and Arlington Catholic High School, eventually winnowing the pool down to a list of the top-five finalists and one winner. At the reception, special guest Kristen Lauerman, manager and assistant programmer of film and video at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, announced the names of all six entries. The winner, Marley Jurgensmeyer, was awarded $500 by AIFF. The reception also marked the opening call for submissions to this year’s film festival, scheduled to be held in October.

MEET THE WINNING ARTIST:
Marley Jurgensmeyer is a ninth-grade student at Arlington High School. Jurgensmeyer became intrigued by the competition after hearing about it from her father, who saw a call for entries in the Arlington Advocate. Jurgensmeyer knew she wanted to incorporate an international flair to her piece and did so through the use of flags from different countries. Jurgensmeyer said she’s better at computer art than drawing, and leaned on her Photoshop skills to create the final product. She said she was surprised to be named the winner and thinks producing another poster would be fun.

MEET THE TOP-FIVE FINALISTS:
The top-five finalists were also recognized at the reception on Feb. 2. They are: Dylan Desjardins, 10th-grader from Arlington High School; Sarah Griesmer, 10th-grader from Arlington High School; Adam Hill, 11th-grader from Arlington High School, Richan Li, 11th-grader from Arlington Catholic High School; Ziza Soares, ninth-grader from Arlington High School.

FILM ENTRIES are now being accepted in the following categories:

“Judy Pancoast’s velvety voice, phrasing and conversational delivery of a song are all products of years spent listening to the timeless recordings of the Carpenters. Her passion and joy for the material make Judy the perfect vocalist to pay tribute.”
—Randy Schmidt, author of Little Girl Blue: the Life of Karen Carpenter

Featuring GRAMMY Nominated Vocalist JUDY PANCOAST and Musical Director Michael Pierce.
A most romantic way to celebrate the most romantic weekend of the year, with the timeless love songs of The Carpenters, including such classics as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “I Won’t Last a Day Without You” and, of course, “Close to You.”

Pancoast was just eleven years old when her older sister told her about a song she’d heard on the radio, and said that the girl singing it sounded “just like you.”  That was the summer of 1970, and when Judy finally heard “(They Long to Be) Close to You” it was the beginning of a childhood adulation that would last well into her adult years.  She spent her adolescent and teen years listening nearly non-stop to the music of the brother and sister duo who called themselves “Carpenters,” and she became one of the charter members of their fan club at age 12.

Judy’s natural rich alto voice blended well with Karen’s, and she spent countless hours in front of a mirror with a hair brush “microphone” mimicking her idol’s voice.  Later, while a music major at the University of Maine, she was advised to “stop trying to sound like Karen Carpenter,” but although she managed finally to all but erase the traces of Karen’s styling, the influence had already had its impact.  Randy Schmidt, author of “Little Girl Blue: the Life of Karen Carpenter” says this about Judy: “…her velvety voice, phrasing and conversational delivery of a song are all products of years spent listening to the timeless recordings of the Carpenters. Her passion and joy for the material make Judy the perfect vocalist to pay tribute.”

“... Pancoast kept her audience thoroughly entertained for over two hours, reaching people on an emotional level. Pancoast didn’t settle for imitation. She channeled the essence of what The Carpenters always tried to do: show respect and warmth for the people they were singing to. And Pancoast has a voice to handle the technical challenges and emotive qualities of that music…. ”—Bill Copeland Music News

Featuring 2011 Grammy nominated vocalist Judy Pancoast and her band performing the Carpenters classic album, “A Song For You” in its entirely on the 40th Anniversary of its 1972 release!

Vocalist Judy Pancoast with Musical Director, Michael Pierce and their band, celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the June, 1972 release of The Carpenters’ “A Song For You” LP—a concept album which spawned more hits than any other Carpenters record, including the #1 charted smash hits, “Goodbye To Love,” and “Top of the World.” They will perform the complete album in the first set, and more hits and album gems in the second set.

* Proceeds after expenses will benefit PAPA—Performing Arts Parents Association of Arlington High School—a fitting cause, since The Carpenters got their start in High School music classes and band and were always big supporters of music eduction in schools.

WHO says that the Golden Years of Las Vegas Entertainment are gone forever?
After 20 years away, John Warrener returns to the Regent with his newly revamped Las Vegas review show.
So as the title says, the show will be John “Together Again” with his Arlington audience but in a new Vegas format “For The Very First Time!”
In 1993 when the Regent Theatre was turned into a performing center, John who describes himself as a poor man’s blend of Tom Jones, Robert Goulet and Vic Damone with a seasoning of Sinatra, was one of the original performers at the new Regent.  Doing his own shows and also creating a few special shows such as the TRIBUTE TO JUDY GARLAND and THE ANDREWS SISTERS SHOW for the new owner, Rick Stavros. he also MCed the Grand Opening Gala Shows. Two years ago, he returned here to produce TRILOGY’S TRIBUTE TO THE THE ANDREW SISTERS which received rave reviews.
Warrener will reprise his favorite numbers along with some newer songs for the June show. Mix in a bit of comedy and some audience involvement with some special guests and “BINGO!” we have TOGETHER AGAIN FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. Concert goers can look forward to such numbers as the GONNA DO GREAT THINGS medley; the sinister, DELILAH;  CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU Medley; the melancholy, I DREAMED A DREAM; the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM and a host of other songs.
Making her first time appearance at the Regent will be Scarlett Thompson, a talented young performer with a wonderful stage presence. She will be joining John for a couple of special duets. The show also plans on having some surprise guests.

Honing a synthesis of folk and blues for more than 40 years and having released thirteen records, Chris Smither is truly an American original.  A profound songwriter, Chris continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and humanist philosophers.  A blistering guitarist, Chris melds the styles of his two major influences, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt, into his own signature guitar sound. Reviewers praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting.  New York Times:  With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.  Come celebrate Chris’ new record as he returns to the Regent Theatre www.smither.com

Dance Inn Productions proudly presents Dorrance Dance, under the direction of Michelle Dorrance, one of the world’s most innovative and quirky tap choreographers, who recently received the Bessie Award…

For blasting open our notions of tap through the deliciously choral rhythms of swooshing, stamping socks in a transformative Jimmy Slyde tribute, and for the epiphany of showing us the hardworking bare feet inside tap technique, A 2011 New York Dance and Performance Award for Outstanding Production goes to Michelle Dorrance for Remembering Jimmy and Three to One at Danspace Project.

Michelle Dorrance is one of the most sought after tap dancers of her generation. Michelle teaches, choreographs and performs throughout the US and abroad, is on faculty at Broadway Dance Center and performs with the New York City cast of the Off-Broadway sensation, STOMP.

“Remembering Jimmy pays homage to a tap master in both adoring and unaffected terms. It’s hypnotic; the stage is alive with slippery footsteps as dancers — dressed in white and wearing socks — slide from side to side like a flock of ghostly speed skaters. Smack in the center is Ms. Dorrance, the light within: her sunny charisma and lanky body work in mesmerizing combination as she glides across the floor or hits it with fury. (Her coordination and speed are
incredible.)” – The New York Times

‘Til Death Do Us Part: Late Nite Catechism 3 is the latest class to be unveiled in this sinfully funny series.  After teaching countless students all about the saints, venial sins, guilt, limbo and more, Sister is now offering up hilarious lessons on the Sacraments of Marriage and Last Rites, including her own wacky version of the Newlywed Game.  Classroom participation is a must so bring along your sweetie and your sense of humor for a session with the country’s feistiest couples counselor!

Featuring Denise Fennell -
DENISE (MARIE CHRISTINA) FENNELL (Sister) Denise is originally from Boston, MA, where she grew up in a very strict Italian Catholic neighborhood, often attending mass with her Grandma Bianca on a daily basis. Denise currently calls both Los Angeles and New York City home. Some of you may recognize Denise from Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding, in which she frequently appears in the title role of Tina. Maripat Donovan discovered Denise as Tina in her white wedding dress, blue eye shadow and her hair sprayed so high it almost reached heaven. Maripat apparently saw something that led her to believe there was a nun lurking somewhere behind the gum chewing, wise-cracking bride. All kidding aside, Denise would like to thank Maripat for believing in her and for being patient while Denise took the time to believe in herself. It is with great honor that she trades her wedding dress in for a habit, and instead of Tony chooses to marry God.

It’s Frank Zappa meets Pete Seeger!  •  It’s Parliament- Funkadelic and Spike Jones meet Mr. Rogers!  •  It’s Miriam Makeba and Igor Stravinsky meet Captain Kangaroo!

Throw out the rules when Billy Jonas hits the stage! It’s a musical conversation… a sonic celebration … a splendiferous gathering of old and young, because at a Billy Jonas show, the ensemble is… everyone.

Fun for All Ages
Billy Jonas is one of those rare performers who can engage and delight both young and adult audiences.  Billy’s clear tenor voice is well-suited to a plethora of venues, from intimate settings and workshop sessions to large halls and outdoor festivals. For more than two decades, his creative and interactive performances have enchanted and inspired folks from all walks of life — touching hearts, souls, and minds world-wide .  As a founding member of the acclaimed duo “The Billys,” Billy Jonas has made innovative use of “found objects.” He helps audiences discover the music within common items … and within themselves. Billy Jonas’ recordings and live concerts across the US and Canada have generated an enthusiastic following. His CD “What Kind of Cat are You?!” received multiple awards including a First Place/Gold from AFIM (American Federation of Independent Musicians), and a Parent’s Choice Gold.  Jonas’ videos have garnered critical acclaim, including Parents Choice Awards and a New York Times “Best” listing.

The Concert Experience
Billy Jonas’ music is percussion-based, making use of found objects (buckets, broom handles, bottles, key chains and more) as well as traditional instruments. But on any given day, the specific nature of this unforgettable neo-tribal hootenanny is largely determined and shaped by the audience. He tailors both his song selection and its presentation to suit the needs and vibe of each audience. So every Billy Jonas concert is a unique experience. He makes spirited, straightforward music that is accessible to anyone and everyone, regardless of age or cultural background. The big-tent festival quality of Billy’s music facilitates connection and community while fostering inspiration and… most importantly… FUN. Billy Jonas has shared stages with many renowned artists, including Patti Larkin, Ani DiFranco, David Wilcox, Richard Thompson, and Pete Seeger. His upbeat, engaging presence (both onstage and off) encourages active audience participation. His concerts are a magical mix of stagecraft and wholesome, open-ended, anything-can- happen spontaneity.

GRAMMY award winner Alison Krauss says, “Billy Jonas’ talent and wit make him and his music irresistible. Whenever I see him perform, my face hurts from smiling.” And Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary) testifies, “Billy Jonas is one of the most original, moving and simultaneously hilarious performers I’ve ever seen.”

“Star of Kindie Rock” – Time Magazine

“…the most infectious original songs.  It’s like tapping into some pleasure center in the brain – both adult and kid…absurdly appealing – Grade A”
- Entertainment Weekly

That little guy from the Sun will return to the Boston area in April on the national tour of his all-new, out-of-this-stratosphere, multimedia show.  Featuring songs and videos from the brand-new DVD, Gustafer Yellowgold’s Year In The Day, along with plenty of Gustafer “fan favorites,” Gustafer’s show will come to The Regent Theatre, 7 Medford St., Arlington, MA, on Saturday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m.

Groovy Gustafer Yellowgold came from the Sun and landed in Minnesota.  His humorous adventures burst forth in hand-drawn music videos from cartoonist/songwriter/performer Morgan Taylor. Taylor developed the “musical moving storybook” Gustafer Yellowgold experience as equal parts pop rock concert and hand drawn cartoon movie.

In Gustafer Yellowgold’s Year In The Day, we find former Sun resident Gustafer Yellowgold experiencing his unique take on a year’s worth of Earth holidays, both classic and unusual.  New Year’s Day, Groundhog Day, Pancake Day/Fat Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day and many more receive the one-of-a-kind Gustafer blend of blissful pop-music, lyrical poignancy, and cartoon absurdity.

Since his creation in 2005, Gustafer Yellowgold has become an international phenomenon, praised by Newsweek as “full of great pop tunes and hand-drawn animation about a li’l fella from the sun.” The Los Angeles Times enthused, “Taylor’s whimsical, lightly psychedelic world forms an interesting bridge between adult and kids’ music.” The Washington Post declared, “He’s a star on stage and screen! … The mix of catchy tunes and offbeat stories has endeared Taylor, and Gustafer, to teenagers as well.” The Chicago Tribune wrote, “Gustafer Yellowgold has made kids’ music so cool that teenagers and ultra-hip bands such as Wilco want to get in on the act … a shiny blend of pop art and pop tunes.”  New York Magazine named Morgan Taylor “Best Kids’ Performer,” calling Taylor “the most original performer on the family-music scene today.”  Two Gustafer Yellowgold songs have reached #1 on Sirius/XM’s Kids Place Live kids’ music channel.

Gustafer is not just for kids! Gustafer Yellowgold’s Show has performed as the support act for WILCO and The Polyphonic Spree, as well as headlining kids’ venues all across the U.S., in London, and even in Seoul, Korea!  Gustafer has been seen off-Broadway in his own productions of Gustafer Yellowgold’s Mellow Sensation and Gustafer Yellowgold’s Infinity Sock, and his orchestra show, Gustafer Yellowgold’s Golden Heart Symphony, has thrilled audiences coast-to-coast.

Jump, clap, sing, tickle and dance your way into Spring vacation week with Vanessa Trien and her lively, roots-based band, the Jumping Monkeys at Arlington’s Regent Theater!  They will be playing fan favorites as well as some new songs off of their upcoming new CD.  As Boston Children’s Music puts it, ‘Vanessa’s shows are perfect.  It’s hard to explain and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is they do differently, but whatever it is, it really gets the kids (and parents) excited!...She has some sort of magical energy that makes all of her shows super fun…’  Come see and hear what all the buzz is about!

Growing up in New York City, Vanessa Trien cut her musical teeth on family folk sing-alongs, but she blossomed while living in Costa Rica, singing, recording, and performing with an Afro-Caribbean band and later writing and performing her own material. A subsequent move to Boston introduced Trien into the heart of New England’s thriving folk music scene.

“Like many of the moms here in Brookline, I have a minor obsession with Vanessa Trien. It’s not just because she’s an incredible musician who has followed her dreams and released two outstanding albums for children. It’s not just because she has a beautiful smile and a wonderful way with kids. It’s not just because she’s a warm, kind and generous person. It’s not just because her voice is like warm honey. It’s not just because my son and my nephew are both mini-groupies. It’s the sum of all these things that make her such a special part of our community…”

ALL IN – THE POKER MOVIE tells the story of the worldwide poker boom that started in the underground clubs of New York City and went on to be played at homes and casinos all around the globe, as well as becoming a fixture on TV. The film takes us up through the fall of 2011, which includes the front-page story of how the US Government seized the two biggest poker websites in the world, Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars. This controversial action cut off the ability for millions to play and for many to make a living. By its finale the film becomes a timely exploration of the American dream through the world of poker during the game’s return to the mainstream part of our culture over the past decade.

The film features interviews with many well-known social commentators and poker luminaries such as Matt Damon, Ira Glass (NPR), Doris Kearns Goodwin (Pulitzer Prize Winner), Frank Deford, and Kenny Rogers. It also features most of the world’s most famous professional poker   players, including Chris Moneymaker, Annie Duke, Daniel Negreanu, Amarillo Slim, Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, and Phil Hellmuth

A Regent Theatre and Chunky Monkey Productions Presentation:
“Legend of Aahhhs”: A True Fable
From Director Greg Stump

Twenty four years after unleashing the award winning ski film “Blizzard Of Aahhh’s” upon the world, Greg Stump (Lifetime achievement award from International Ski History Association, Maine State Ski Hall of Fame, Named one of the 25 most influential people in skiing by Skiing magazine) returns to the ski film genre with “Legend Of Aahhh’s”.  In “Legend” through a semi-autobiographical approach, Greg explores the history of the ski film and how these films influenced skiing… and pop culture with the birth of the extreme sports movement following the release of “Blizzard Of Aahhh’s” in 1988.
From filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl in the 1930’s (who made the first ski film) through what the young filmmakers are creating today, “Legend” follows the life of the ski film.  One-of-a-kind interviews with Warren Miller, Dick Barrymore, Otto Lang, John Jay, Klaus Obermeyer, Kim Riechhelm, Scot Schmidt, Glen Plake, Mike Hattrup, Lynne Wieland, and many more, drive the film.
Another silky journey down the ski bum highway.

Press on Greg Stump:
The New York Times
“...a maverick film maker in the ski business.”
Premiere Magazine
“To watch Stump Epic’s, is to stand on the edge.”
The Hollywood Reporter
“Electrifying… dazzling ski sequences… expertly captures the culture and lifestyle of the ski world.”
The Atlantic
“In fact, Stump… does not make G-rated, safe-and-sane ski travelogues with elevator music. What he does make are wildly original, nonstop ski action films with comic and dramatic subplots and original scores.”

Mike Bent began his career in magic at age 6, when he checked out his first magic book from the library. That book started him on the path to a lifetime love of learning, creativity and performance. He began performing when he was 15 years old. By the time he graduated from Emerson College, he was performing his original magic and comedy routine at clubs and colleges throughout the country. This led to a performance at the prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival, and numerous television appearances on HBO, Showtime, ABC, NBC, CBS, Comedy Central and A&E.
Mike has been teaching professional comedy writing at Emerson College for more than 20 years. It’s not unusual to watch a comedy show on television and see one of Mike’s former students listed in the credits. In 2009, Mike published his first book—The Everything Guide to Comedy Writing. Mike won the Nickelodeon™ Parents’ Picks Award in 2009 for being “Boston’s Best Children’s Entertainer.” In 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011, Mike performed at The White House in Washington, D.C. at the annual Easter Egg Roll.

A live Debbie and Friends show is a trip for the entire family—a joyful jaunt through a variety of styles, from straight-ahead pop, to country, to rock, to reggae, all delivered by a band of musicians who are clearly there because they love it. Kids become the Big Bad Wolf and blow the house down, fix Rosie’s wrong rhymes, and test their skills with the Simon Says Song. Like everyone’s favorite teacher, Debbie connects with her audience and respects kids for the people they are, and her warmth is sincere and her radiance downright contagious.
What kids love is her energy, her sunshine, and the interesting array of musicians she brings to each show, including keyboard, all sorts of hand percussion, energetic and sometimes zany backing vocalists, saxophones, banjo, fiddle, flute, whistles—you name it. Every show is different. Kids love being active participants in every song, and the audience is as much a part of the show as Debbie and her band.
Perfect for families with kids ages 2-8.

2010 Nickelodeon Parents Pick Award
2010 Boston Children’s Music Performance Award

And, Debbie and Friends has a song on the 2011 Grammy Nominated CD!

“Sweet, upbeat, classic kids’ songs that are fun to sing along to and bring new twists to your favorite children’s stories. You should see a room full of kids reacting to this song—it’s so much fun!”  – Amber Bobnar, Boston Children’s Music

“Fantastic concert!  Debbie and Friends puts on a wonderful show. It makes your heart feel good to see the families and the kids dancing!” – Arlene Smith, Watertown, MA Family Network Director

Through a series of events beyond her control, Maeve (Jennifer Nichole Porter) a Blues musician, finds herself trapped in a sordid East Texas motel room with her violent husband, Colin (Brian A. White), who, unbeknownst to her, has been released from prison early. Held hostage with her is Elijah (Scott Winters) a professed Good Samaritan and fan of Maeve’s, whose interest in her seems disproportionate to his claims. Colin has tracked Maeve down and waylaid her in order to apologize for his past behavior with a special present he’s picked out just for her — a twisted surprise that opens a raw and anguished chapter of their shared history. But Colin’s carefully laid plan is interrupted by an unexpected visit from his jailhouse girlfriend Arlene (Kathleen Kimball) and the imminent arrival of her jealous, homicidal husband Bud Sankey, whose sights are set on Colin. 40 WEST is an intense, violent, and often darkly funny exploration of power, guilt, revenge, and the cost of redemption.

Not Rated - Contains strong language and violence.

Karen K & the Jitterbugs (featuring Karen Kalafatas, or Karen “K” to her fans) have been delighting families up and down the east coast since the release of their debut album, Pancakes for Dinner, last year.  Based out of Brooklyn, NY & Karen’s new home of Arlington, MA, Karen K & her Jitterbugs’ are rising stars in the “kindie” music scene – a term coined for the blend of kids music and indie rock – thanks to their eclectic sound and Karen Ks well-written, memorable, original songs.  As upbeat and danceable as they are humorous and relatable (take “That’s What I’m Wearing Today” about a tot attempting to dress herself in the morning, or the title track about a mom delighting her offspring by replacing dinner with breakfast), parents find themselves singing along to her catchy tunes as their tots dance happily in the aisles.  A former musical theater veteran with powerhouse vocals, Karen K’s immeasurable energy, and innate ability to connect with audience members young and old make her as likable as she is listenable.
Karen K & the Jitterbugs have been featured in New York Magazine’s Best of 2011 issue and were chosen as a Critic’s Pick in Time Out New York Kids and New York magazine.  They opened for family music super-star Elizabeth Mitchell in September in New York City at the much-anticipated Super Sonic Kindie Music Festival, and will be performing up and down the east coast all year.  Karen’s popular Jitterbugs music classes for kids 5 years and under, currently running in New York City and Boston, MA, have been hailed by parents as “an absolute joy of a class” and “the best class in the city”.

Alexander, King of Jesters, revives a cultural icon—the medieval fool.  His period music, mind bending sight gags, amazing stunts, and wildly imaginative spirit transport audiences to another place and time.  Alex has been seen on Showtime, PBS, and ‘America’s Got Talent, at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, and was introduced on Public Radio International as a ‘cultural ambassador’ for his tours in Russia.

The RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT encompasses a documentary film that examines the history of different musical genres through the eyes of five of the most influential electronic producers/DJ’s in music today, along with the original music created for the project.  Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights and Skrillex each take a specific musical style and explore it by writing and recording a brand new track with a grouping of influential collaborators in that genre.

The entire experience comes to life in Re:Generation’s feature documentary directed by award-winning documentarian Amir Bar-Lev (“My Kid Could Paint That,” “The Tillman Story”). Along the way, these five DJ/producers journey to hotbeds for each genre including New Orleans for jazz, Nashville for country, Los Angeles for rock, Boston for classical and Detroit for R&B.  For example, you’ll find Denver-based Pretty Lights traveling to Nashville, visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and going into the studio with the legendary Dr. Ralph Stanley and LeAnn Rimes for “Wayfaring Stranger.” Skrillex teams up with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger along the Venice Boardwalk in Los Angeles to later collaborate on “Breakn’ A Sweat” with John Densmore for what will amount to the first original recording featuring members of The Doors since An American Prayer was released in 1978.

Martha Reeves of the Vandellas and The Funk Brothers get a visit in Detroit from breakbeat pioneers The Crystal Method for an R&B horn- sassy and down-bass “I’m Staying”; Mark Ronson heads to Piety Street Studios and Preservation Hall in New Orleans to meet up with Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Trombone Shorty, members of the Dap Kings and Zigaboo Modeliste to record a raw, jazzy number titled “A La Modeliste”; and DJ Premier heads down the Paul Revere trail from Boston where he conducts the Berklee Symphony Orchestra in his New York City studio to capture lyrics by NAS for “Regeneration.”

Presented by Hyundai Veloster, the RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT crosses the most unexpected generations and genres in today’s most innovative form of music creativity.  Hyundai’s role as the project’s benefactor not only supports the artists, but creates an ambitious platform that challenges artists to fashion something they might not otherwise have imagined for these captured ‘fish out of water’ moments.  Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method puts it best: “There is no sound we can’t make.  There’s not a beat we can’t create.  There’s not an artist we can’t record…Now what?”  “You just put me in a whole different way on how to listen,” adds DJ Premier.

Her intelligence, class, and masterful musicianship have long been respected among her peers….”

-J. Schlesinger, AllAboutJazz.com

“Her voice sets her apart from any other vocalist on record today. A mood that transcends the ordinary, that in one moment exudes warmth and is poignant, in another driving hard and swinging.”  -Shirley Horn

“Best of all, she sings with power, conviction, originality, total believability. She is that rare bird: the true jazz singer with the soul of an entertainer.”

The Frank Withey Memorial Scholarship Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, and educational purposes; more specifically, to assist artists and art/music related programs and events in their educational, professional, and programmatic development and advancement, and to raise the appreciation for the arts in our community.
In the beginning, this Foundation will endeavor to raise funds to be given in scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue their full time music education at the college and university level.
Recipients will be required to show acceptance into a college or university, with the intent to major in music. As the foundation grows, it is hoped to provide scholarships in the Fine Arts, primarily Painting and Sculpture, to high school seniors attending classes at the college and university level, with the intent to major in painting and/or sculpture.
Further growth of the Foundation, hopefully, will enable the Foundation to provide for lessons, instruments and supplies to gifted individuals of all ages in the community and to host and present events to raise funds, enabling the Foundation to supply deserving individuals the finances and/or supplies needed to further develop their talents. http://www.frankwitheyscholarshipfund.org/
