Kate Taylor released her first album, “Sister Kate”, on the Atlantic Records’ Cotillion label, in 1971.
In the early summer of 1969 Kate went to London to visit her brother James Taylor who had just finished recording his first record.  It was on Apple Records, the Beatles’ newly formed label. James introduced Kate to his producer Peter Asher, of the famed singing duo Peter and Gordon.  Peter was now producing records for the Beatles. One day James and Kate were invited to an afternoon gathering at Peter’s country home outside of London.  In the yard was an ancient and empty swimming pool made of stone.  They went down into that pool and sang some of the songs that they had worked up together over the years. Kate left London and came back home to the States.  A month or so later, Peter called her on the phone, told her he was moving to Los Angeles and invited her to come to California to make a record. This was a heady and fertile time to be in Los Angeles.  The musicians gathering in that town at that time were energetic, talented and creative, and Kate and Peter made many friends.  As the record was being recorded,  wonderful musicians contributed their talents and songs to it. Carole King, Linda Rondstadt, James, Peter, Elton John, Danny Kootch Kortchmar, and John Hartford were among the many artists who contributed songs, musicianship, or both to Sister Kate. The record was released and Kate went on tour.  The first single off the record was an Elton John tune entitled “Country Comfort” from his newly released first album; Tumbleweed Connection

Kate Taylor was born in Boston and raised up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has a life surrounded by music, art and wit. Her father, Dr. Isaac Taylor, was a professor of medicine and Dean of the UNC Medical School at Chapel Hill.  He had the soul of a poet. Her mother, Trudy Taylor, was a singer and an artist and crafts person.  Her brothers, Alex, James, Livingston and Hugh, are musicians, songwriters, performers and sailors. Kate sang as a youngster and had her first combo at 15. She recorded her first album; Sister Kate, in 1971 with Peter Asher.  Her second album; Kate Taylor, was produced by her brother James for Columbia Records.  Her third record; It’s in There and It’s Got to Come Out, was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and produced by Barry Beckett, the keyboardist in the famed Muscle Shoals Sound rhythm section. After starting her family, her performing schedule changed as she took time to raise her daughters. Her daughters are now launched and Kate is once again bringing her original songs and her favorite covers to her beautiful audiences. Her most recent albums include Beautiful Road and Fair Time!

To this day, as Kate travels to perform, her audience continues to let her know just how much they love Sister Kate.  Often they appear with their copy of the now 46 year old record for Kate, at long last, to sign. Get ready for Sister Kate Revisited...

Bob Dylan once called this man a “Folk Italian Hero” and it wouldn’t be an understatement to say, that’s about the highest praise Francesco De Gregori could receive. Many years into his career now, Francesco is still managing to live up to the praise, taking his timeless folk songs to bigger crowds than ever, all over the world.

Even for non-Italian speaking audiences there is still something deeply moving about Francesco’s music. It has a worldly European nostalgia about it which he displays as he takes crowds through up-tempo rockers and wistful ballads often leading at front-of-stage with his acoustic guitar and harmonica. The most surprising thing is how cool the man manages to look. Sporting his trademark trilby hat and a dapper suit, Francesco carries himself with a class and sophistication that helps to make his music all the more powerful.

Its no surprise that the man known as “Il Principe dei cantautori” (‘The Prince of the singer-songwriters’) is still going today because music as timeless as Francesco De Gregori’s will always find a stage to be played on.

Few hard rock bands are as widely respected yet criminally overlooked as King’s X. The band, which combines progressive rock and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues and British Invasion groups, still features original members Doug Pinnick (vocals/bass), Ty Tabor (guitar) and Jerry Gaskill (drums). They were ranked #83 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and released over a dozen albums featuring the radio hits Over My Head, It’s Love, Black Flag, and Dogman.

King’s X released their first studio album, Out of the Silent Planet, in 1988. Despite being hailed by music critics, the album didn’t fare well commercially, peaking at #144 on the Billboard album charts. The band’s 1989 sophomore release, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska, fared slightly better from a commercial standpoint. Significantly, the song Over My Head received moderate airplay on MTV and radio. The increase in exposure would prove beneficial when the band released their third album, Faith, Hope, Love, in the fall of 1990.

Faith, Hope, Love was the group’s first album to crack the US Top 100, with the help of the successful single It’s Love. The band landed a gig opening for AC/DC in the U.S. and Europe for the first half of 1991. They also toured with Living Colour and were nearing the peak of their popularity.

King’s X signed with major label Atlantic Records for their next self-titled release. After parting ways with their longtime manager, the band enlisted veteran producer Brendan O’Brien, who had previously produced albums for Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam. The ensuing release, Dogman, performed respectfully on the charts. This success resulted in the band opening shows for Pearl Jam and a show-stopping performance on the opening night of the mammoth Woodstock ‘94 festival

King’s X completed their contract with Atlantic Records with “Ear Candy” in 1996, before moving to Metal Blade Records where they released four studio albums and one live release. The band’s latest studio albums, Ogre Tones (2005) and XV (2008), were released on the InsideOut label. “XV” was their first album since Ear Candy to chart on the Billboard Top 200, ushering in a new wave of popularity for the band.

KINGS OF SPADE are a high-energy, shameless dancing, foot-stomping brand of Blues Rock’N’Roll.  Fronting Kings of Spade is florescent-mohawked, Kasi Nunes, who’s fiery vocals recall a hybrid of soul queens Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin.  Always wanting to push the bar at live shows KOS is in constant collaboration with other performers including dancers, musicians, or niche visual artists. They won 1st Place in the 2014 & 2015 Honolulu Pulse Awards “Best Local Rock Band” category, but have always set their sights on National touring.

With music conceived in their hometown in Honolulu, Hawaii, KOS jumped at the opportunity to record in Nashville, TN, with 2016 Grammy-winning producer, Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings). With the help of a successfully over-funded Kickstarter project to raise funds to record with Cobb, KOS finished their second self-titled album which has since been nominated for a 2015 Hoku award for “Best Rock Album.” They finished their 7th US mainland tour with several West Coast dates in March 2016 including a landmark showcase at LA’s Whisky-A-Go-Go. After performing a series of summer dates in June 2017 opening for King’s X in Europe, they return to the Regent Theatre for another unforgettable night of music as the support act for King’s X.

Изневери в повече (Too Much Infidelities) was written and directed by Emil Markov, who became famous for his work in some of the most successful productions in Bulgarian theater and TV within the past years (e.g. TV series Stolen life/Otkradnat zhivot, the comedy show Komitsite, etc.).

Изневери в повече is performed entirely in the Bulgarian language and the plot is funny, tangled and ironic but of one truly ugly and frequent phenomenon of contemporary life – infidelity. The play is a comedy, full of ridiculously hilarious situations, but, at the same time, it will provoke the audience to think more deeply about the underlying causes, the conflict of values and the real importance of truly significant things in life.

Written by a great Bulgarian director, the play touches every Bulgarian by exploiting internal controversies and issues that are typical for Bulgarian lifestyle, couples and individuals.

Through The Doors is a multimedia celebration of Jim Morrison and The Doors touring since 1980. This re-creation of the sound, look and “feel” of an actual Doors concert is so complete, it never ceases to startle even the seasoned crew. And it starts right away: In the darkened theater, well before the band has taken the stage, anticipation runs hot and the chanting for “Jim” begins. Perhaps it is the audiences’ overwhelming desire to experience a true “Resurrection” that fuels the flames. Or, attribute it if you must, to a legend that survives, even grows, some 40 years after the mysterious death of James Douglas Morrison and the dissolution of his band.
Even now The Doors’ albums continue to sell and Jim’s face still appears on the covers of magazines, film, television and radio. They serve up the “Lizard King” on a daily basis, and still the masses pay homage in droves that surpass even the dizzying heights of the band’s popularity when still “alive”. And yet, a Through The Doors performance goes far beyond the simple duplication of a concert that would have been standard late 1960’s fare.

This performance is more akin to a Broadway show or Vegas Extravaganza – seasoned professional actor/musicians utilizing sound, staging, lighting, and projection equipment that audiences have come to expect. The effect is electrifying and the response has been phenomenal, as their longevity alone can testify to.  So, sit back in your seat (for as long as you can), and get ready to travel through the Doors of perception, traverse space and time on a psychedelic, mind expanding dance-trance!  Ladies and Gentlemen: Through The Doors!

In 1999, Doug Church starred in and performed soundtrack vocals for the award winning documentary film “Almost Elvis.” Doug still works with Legends in Concert from time to time, but prefers to freelance and do the shows that won him acclaim throughout the Midwest. He has awed his audiences for 19 years, leaving them totally mesmerized and shaken by the voice Elvis Presley! Doug Church’s voice has been acknowledged by his peers as being the closest to “The King’s.

In order for the Regent Theatre to deliver a show of this caliber and value Mr. Church will not be accompanied by a live band, rather he will perform while accompanied by a live and dynamic orchestral recording.

ABOUT THE BANDS…

Tsunami of Sound was formed in the spring of 2008. ToS plays originals, classic TV themes and kooky covers all in their own style. They’re live show is second to none and occasionally they perform with their own Go Go Dancers called The Cameo Girls which are Nicole Huggins and Cha Cha Epps.
ToS is, David Esposito on guitar, Rick Sanger on drums and Jamie Huggins on bass.

The Beachcombovers
, are an incredible four piece Surf band comprised of… Tommy White guitar & vocals, John “JP” Prendergast guitar & vocals, Ramon Fabregas drums and J. Bruce Scott bass. Their infectious brand of Surf music harkens back to a simpler time and never fails to capture audiences with a sense of fun, something that is sorely lacking in today’s hurry up over-amped world…

Big Brother & the Holding Co 2017

The band that launched the career of Janis Joplin, recorded ‘Cheap Thrills’, one of the greatest albums of all time and were pioneers of the San Francisco sound in the time of the Summer of Love now features two original members, Peter Albin,(bass and vocals)and Dave Getz,(Drums. Peter founded the band in 1965 and Dave joined in March 1966. They have been playing together as Big Brother since then.

Big Brother’s lead singer, Eileen Humphreys has the mind-blowing vocal ‘chops’ that are required to do all of the Joplin classics with total authority and feeling. She is truly one of the great Janis interpreters and blues singers who can stand up to the inevitable comparisons (They know there will never be another Janis) without being an imitator.

Tom Finch, guitar/vocals and Kate Russo, violin/keyboard/vocals are both dynamic, exciting and virtuoso musicians who bring their energy, style and perfect understanding of the music to complete the mix.

It is a film spoken BY kids TO kids about the risks of the recreational mixing of prescription drugs with alcohol. Kids and young adults live in a world with too many options. The common trend of experimenting with prescription drugs and alcohol is unfortunately very common in high schools and college campuses across the country and is resulting in tragic accidents.

What starts out as a fun story about a citizen who embeds himself with the media covering the 2016 Presidential Campaigns, turns into an eye-opening journey; where basic principles like truth, free speech, a free press and the rule of law are under siege. Ultimately, Democracy Through the Looking Glass examines the junction between media, politics and technology in the Post-Truth Era.

This 40,000 foot story is told from the trenches of press conferences, voter experiences and the campaign trail, with insights from veteran CBS journalist Bob Schieffer, Boston Globe Editor Brian McGrory, Harvard University’s Nicco Mele, Larry Lessig and others.

On April 4, 2017, The Regent will join over 180 art house movie theatres across the country in 124 cities and in 41 states (plus four locations in Canada) to participate collectively in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the ‘80s movie 1984 starring John Hurt, who sadly died last month. This date was chosen because it’s the day George Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. These theaters owners also strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and see any attempt to scuttle that program as an attack on free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard.

As part of National Screening Day‘s request “for participating theaters that charge admission to donate a portion of the proceeds to local charities and organizations,” the Regent has chosen Arlington Center for the Arts as our local partner for this purpose. Facing the loss of their 28-year home in the Gibbs Building, the Arts Center is in the midst of a capital campaign to create the “New ACA” in the heart of Arlington Center, in the historic Central School behind Town Hall.

Rated R for nudity, sexuality and some violence
“Orwell’s novel begins with the sentence, ‘It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen,’” reads a joint statement on behalf of all participating theaters. “Less than two months into the new presidential administration, theater owners collectively believe the clock is already striking thirteen. Orwell’s portrait of a government that manufactures their own facts, demands total obedience, and demonizes foreign enemies, has never been timelier.”

We all add, “The endeavor encourages theaters to take a stand for the values of freedom of speech, love and respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there are no such things as ‘alternative facts’...zero tolerance for lies amongst our leaders. By doing what we do best – showing a movie – the goal is that cinemas can initiate a much-needed community conversation at a time when the existence of facts, and basic human rights are under attack. Through nationwide participation and strength in numbers, these screenings are intended to galvanize people at the crossroads of cinema and community, and bring us together to foster communication and resistance against current efforts to undermine the most basic tenets of our society.”

The documentary, WOMEN OF 1915 combines facts and emotion to honor these brave women of the Armenian Genocide, many of whom lost their lives, survived to create new lives, or were forced into lives that were not their own. Many women, Armenian, European, and American, also traveled great distances to rescue lives, even at the risk of their own. Among the women highlighted in the film are survivors, volunteers, and resisters, including survivor Aurora Mardiganian, American volunteer Mary Louise Graffam, diplomat Diana Apkar, and Danish missionary Maria Jacobsen.

It has been said that, “...you could laugh until you cry” while watching Alexander Feldman perform as Alex the Jester but it suffices to say that audiences of all ages will be entertained beyond belief when The Jester of Notre Dame visits the Regent Theatre stage as part of Family Fun Saturday mornings.

Recomended for Adults and Kids… 5 and up

Looking like a joker from your favorite deck of playing cards, Feldman’s zany mischief, boyish antics and obvious comedy is a genuine adventure in fun for your entire family.  At one moment, he’ll be playing elementary recorders in incredible ways and the next moment juggling jingle bells while performing mind-bending stunts and contorting his seemingly-rubber body with pretzel-like precision. Alex (who lives in Somerville, MA) will stun you with his hilarious sight gags too with facial expressions that can stop a herd of camels and will make you laugh until you drop!

Feldman performs in the style of a medieval court jester, a tradition which combines music, juggling, prop comedy and stage magic. While performing at the Just for Laughs - International Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada, Feldman began speaking a contemporary version of the medieval gibberish language Grammelot as part of his act. He uses Grammelot to cut through language barriers regularly. In November of 2009, he was selected by the U.S. State Department to entertain in Russia as a cultural ambassador. He has appeared on Showtime, Public Broadcasting Service and America’s Got Talent, and he has performed in theaters from Alaska to Australia and back.

His antics on-stage will last about an hour so if you have ants in your pants and need to shake them out just join the crowd Saturday morning at 10:30am to dance and laugh along with dozens of young families. A limited number of booster seats are available for little ones so come early, this show is sure to be a near sell-out.

Book by Thomas Meehan
Music by Charles Strouse
Lyrics by Martin Charnin
And produced through special arrangement with Music Theatre International

ANNIE is based on Harold Gray’s popular comic strip Little Orphan Annie. The comic strip premiered in the 1920s in the New York Daily News, and became one of the most widely read strips in the 30s and 40s. Lyricist-director Martin Charnin bought a coffee table book called “The Life and Hard Times of Little Orphan Annie” as a Christmas gift for a friend in 1970. The clerk at the bookstore was too busy to wrap the book, so Charnin took the book home to wrap it. Instead, he read it and fell in love with the strip, and set out to secure the rights, Christmas week of 1970. The friend never got the book.

The Arlington Catholic Drama Club presents . . . .

Charnin championed the idea to colleagues Charles Strouse, a two-time Tony-winning composer, and Thomas Meehan, a short story writer for The New Yorker. It took a great deal of campaigning to get them interested, but the team was finally formed in 1971, when they began to write the musical.
Annie is full of toe-tapping hits such as It’s the Hard Knock Life, Easy Street, You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile, NYC, Maybe and everyone’s favorite song – Tomorrow. These wonderful songs have become staples of musical theatre repertoires worldwide and now, 35 years later, it remains one of the most loved and universally appealing musicals of all time.
A show for the entire family to sing along to!!

The Complete “Band On The Run” Starring Denny Laine of Wings

Denny Laine celebrates the 40th anniversary of the “Wings Over America” tour with a live on stage performance of their greatest album, “Band on the Run”—complete and unabridged! Within a year of its release, “Band On the Run” had sold over six-million copies worldwide, having spawned three U.S. Top Ten hits-”Helen Wheels”, “Jet”, and the title track. The singles alone occupied the U.S. chart for forty-five (45) weeks, while the album stayed on the charts for over two (2) years. “Band On The Run” was in the Top-30 of the Billboard 200 as recently as 2010, when a remastered version of the album was released.

This special evening celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Wings Over America tour. The sold out U.S. leg of the “Wings Over the World” tour helped carry the’ “Silly Love Songs” single and “Wings at the Speed of Sound” album to number one on their respective charts. From the tour came the film “Rock Show” and the number one triple album set “Wings over America”.

By far the most successful album involving any of the Beatles following their breakup, “Band on the Run” was created by Paul McCartney, Denny Laine and Linda McCartney. The other members of Wings quit the group just prior to the departure to Lagos, Nigeria to begin sessions for the album, but out of adversity came advantage.  With Paul McCartney on vocals, piano, drums, guitar, bass, and keys, and Denny Laine contributing vocals, keys, acoustic, electric and bass guitars, and Linda McCartney on keys and vocals, Band On the Run transcended the era to become an album whose deep cuts such as “Let Me Roll It”,  “Picasso’s Last Words”, and “Mrs. Vanderbilt”  and “Bluebird” are better remembered-and played more often on classic rock radio-than most hits of the era.

Expect other Wings hits such as “Live and Let Die”,  and “Time to Hide” as well as Denny’s legendary lead vocal on the Moody Blues classic “Go Now” to round out this special anniversary show.

The 2017 Family Festival offers nearly four full days of some of the world’s best films for children and adults. Films are screened in English or their native language with subtitles, and many are being screened in the US or the East Coast for the first time. It might even be your only time to see them in New England.

This year’s festival, Where Books Come Alive, features films based mostly on children’s books: from American favorites, including Robert McCloskey’s Make Way for Ducklings, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, to Swiss classics such as Johanna Spyri’s Heidi and Selina Chönz’s and Alois Carigiet’s Little Mountain Boy (Schellen Ursli). There are films about new siblings, friendship in South Korea, Vietnamese immigrants in Germany, Little League Baseball in Uganda, three 12 year-old boys from Brooklyn with a $1.8 million record deal, and so much more from which to choose!

Thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Aardman Animation’s Creative Director Merlin Crossingham (Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep) is coming “across the pond” from the UK to talk and sign autographs after a screening of the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit on opening night at the Regent Theater and to lead two workshops on model making on Saturday, January 14, hosted by the Belmont Media Center.

Starring Orlando Bloom, Rosemarie DeWitt and Jake Johnson

Young married couple Tim and Lee have planted the seeds of a family in their East L.A. duplex. Three years after the birth of their son, they’re still adjusting to the joy and pain of life with kid, navigating potty talk at the dinner table, disagreeing over preschools, and putting off doing their taxes. For a change of pace, they decide to house-sit for one of Lee’s Westside yoga clients. Once there, Tim discovers something suspicious in the yard that gets the wheels in his head turning, and Lee, worried that he will become obsessed with digging deeper, decides to drop their toddler off with her mother for a much-needed night out on the town. Sans-wife, Tim invites his buddies over, and a “boys-will-be-boys” scenario ensues, full of drinking, awkward joint-passing, and perhaps getting a bit too close to a girl who isn’t the mother of his child.

Under Swanberg’s direction, Rosemarie DeWitt and Jake Johnson deliver dead-on portrayals of parents on the verge of a nervous breakdown that will ring true to anyone who has ever juggled parenthood with keeping a marriage exciting. —A.M.

A gorgeous look inside honeybee colonies

Monday, June 10 at 7:30pm

Bookmark and Share

Taking a journey through the honeybee colonies in California, Switzerland, China, and Australia, “More Than Honey” explores bee decimation. The same scenario is repeated around the world: 50%-90% of bees are disappearing from colony to colony. The bee epidemic has started a phenomenon known in the scientist community as, “Colony Collapse Disorder.” The dying species has had a negative global effect, and without the bee population, our humanity will slowly be affected.

Director and writer, Markus Imhoof travels from the different regions to interview beekeepers’ work to preserve their colonies. With their knowledge and practice in the bee world, the beekeepers show the daily paradox working in both natures’ rhythm and against it.

“This. Film. Is. Fascinating.” – Cleveland International Film Fest*

“Surprisingly up-close images of bees at rest and in flight give buzz to an inescapably downbeat topic”

Featuring 2011 Grammy nominated vocalist Judy Pancoast

Pancoast was just eleven years old when her older sister told her about a song she’d heard on the radio, and said that the girl singing it sounded “just like you.”  That was the summer of 1970, and when Judy finally heard “(They Long to Be) Close to You” it was the beginning of a childhood adulation that would last well into her adult years.  She spent her adolescent and teen years listening nearly non-stop to the music of the brother and sister duo who called themselves “Carpenters,” and she became one of the charter members of their fan club at age 12.

Judy’s natural rich alto voice blended well with Karen’s, and she spent countless hours in front of a mirror with a hair brush “microphone” mimicking her idol’s voice.  Later, while a music major at the University of Maine, she was advised to “stop trying to sound like Karen Carpenter,” but although she managed finally to all but erase the traces of Karen’s styling, the influence had already had its impact.  Randy Schmidt, author of “Little Girl Blue: the Life of Karen Carpenter” says this about Judy: “…her velvety voice, phrasing and conversational delivery of a song are all products of years spent listening to the timeless recordings of the Carpenters. Her passion and joy for the material make Judy the perfect vocalist to pay tribute.”

“... Pancoast kept her audience thoroughly entertained for over two hours, reaching people on an emotional level. Pancoast didn’t settle for imitation. She channeled the essence of what The Carpenters always tried to do: show respect and warmth for the people they were singing to. And Pancoast has a voice to handle the technical challenges and emotive qualities of that music…. ”—Bill Copeland Music News

This Show is Sold Out! Thank you!

Between Identity, Willpower, and Passion:
This is Tango Now’s Identidad Renews the Tango Experience on the Stage

It is midnight outside: a magical and mystical time for hundreds of cultures past and present.  Respect, appreciation and fear for this moment infuses the bodies and minds of those brave enough to venture on it.  In Tango the midnight, its darkness, and the pulse of the city at that very moment conjures the deepest introspection, and opens up a window for change. But more than a moment in time, the midnight is a portal, it represents the end and the beginning, when and where things die, are born, and reborn, and this cycle goes on repeating itself for all eternity.

It is midnight inside: in the depths of people’s hearts and minds.  The introspective mood allows our main character, the Marionette, to realize her condition.  Devoid of freewill she suddenly grasps the distressing reality that, like most everyone around her, she has been manipulated her entire life.  On her side, the Duende, the incarnation and materialization of the midnight, the spirit of passion and change.  Against her, the Puppeteer, the manipulator, the one who won’t let her go.  What follows is a struggle for freedom, for a new identity, for willpower, and for the right to live life with the fullest of passions.

This is Tango Now’s Identidad, is the creation of three highly accomplished artists: dancers and choreographers Fernanda Ghi & Guillermo Merlo, and musician and anthropologist Alfredo Minetti.  They felt a gap in the world of tango shows as well as a need from contemporary audiences that was unfulfilled.  They decided then to go beyond the traditional tango show, creating a complete sensorial experience, using the powerful rationality and emotiveness, and the raw intensity and kinetic energy that only tango has, and created a story that resonates with any person living in the present.  In order to stage it, they decided for a tango quartet (bandoneón, violin, piano and double bass) and selected some of the greatest tangos composed and arranged by Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla.  They selected two more couples of dancers to share the stage with Fernanda & Guillermo, who choreographed the show with some of the best dance one will ever see. And finally, they teamed up with one of the greatest light designers in South America, Aníbal Rea, who took the challenge to add yet another incredible layer to this experience. The result is a tango experience unlike any other!

Every detail of this show has been meticulously and creatively crafted in order to create a magical and mystical experience for the senses.  Much more than performance takes place in the stage.  The trio designed the show to produce a synergy between the performers and spectators.  The nostalgia, sensuality, vulnerability, irony, and passion of tango pour out from the stage infusing every spectator.  The main goal of the performers is to touch the souls of the audiences. Through the deep melancholic passion and cathartic introspection of the tango, audiences will come to see their surroundings with the renewed spirit that the mythical midnight allows — feeling the world as a tango.

Renowned Rock & Roll photographer Kevin Mazur, has pulled together an impressive team for his first feature-length documentary about the changing face of celebrity and the many ways that the media has conveyed, defined, and even demeaned what it means to be famous today.Taking a historical ride through the early days of Hollywood and the rise of the paparazzi, $ellebrity explores how fame has changed from the highly-structured studio system to the current free-for-all press and paparazzi frenzy.

Candid interviews with Jennifer Aniston, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Sara Jessica Parker, and Kid Rock among others, help to give a glimpse into the lives of those on the front lines of our increasingly obsessive world of pop culture celebrity.

Fame is now a national pastime, it is what millions of us follow, believe in and seemingly what we care about most - as well as a billion dollar-a-year industry.  But what does our intense fascination with celebrity say about us? And how much is too high a price to pay for our own curiosity run rampant? $ellebrity captures the free-for-all of pop culture today and the ever-changing face of fame.

“An engrossing study in the communication possible…between man and beast.”
- Variety

“That rare gem that reaches out to anyone with a soul and leaves an indelible impression”
- Collider.com

“A crowd-pleaser with a big heart”
- The Hollywood Reporter

Each year thousands of wild horses are rounded up and removed from public lands by the U.S. Government. All will need permanent homes. None has ever been touched by a human hand.

Wild Horse, Wild Ride tells the story of the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge, an annual contest that dares 100 people to each tame a totally wild mustang in order to get it adopted into a better life beyond federal corrals.

Stunning and poignant, Alex Dawson and Greg Gricus’ debut feature documentary chronicles a handful of unforgettable characters from their first uneasy meeting with their horses and over three months as they attempt to transform from scared strangers to the closest of companions.

Eventually all will converge in Fort Worth, Texas, to compete against each other and offer the horses up for adoption at an auction in which the trainers, if they wish to keep their horses, must bid against the public.
Hailed by The Hollywood Reporter as a “crowd-pleaser with a big heart,” the film traverses across the United States to tell stories of the profound the bonds that can develop between people and animals. From the rolling hills of New Hampshire to the Navajo Nation to the heart of Cowboy Country, the film captures a journey that is at times harrowing, humorous, heartwarming and heartbreaking as these wild spirits - both human and horse - embark on the ride of their lives.

Powderwhore Productions, a backcountry ski film company based in Utah, is proud to announce its eighth annual ski movie, called “Choose Your Adventure.” The film will premiere at Brewvies in Salt Lake City on September 26th 2012, followed by a 50 city TOUR through ski towns throughout North America.

This movie is such a mixed bag of characters, exotic locations and action that we wanted to get that point across with the title. You really can’t guess what’s coming next in this film, like the Choose Your Own Adventure book series we enjoyed growing up. We’re exploring an abandoned mining town in the Arctic, dropping cliffs with Hugo Harrison in British Columbia, plunging into the Antarctic Sea in speedos, blasting through deep powder, catching up with crusty locals in the Wasatch and more.

Our interest lies in finding people with real stories and ski objectives. We wanted to tag along and capture their actions and motivation for heading into the mountains, creating more of an authentic experience. We traveled light and moved fast to avoid interfering with the actual adventures as they unfolded.

Despite the underwhelming winter of 2011-12, in which snowfall reached near record lows and unstable avalanche conditions, the Powderwhores were able to make the most of the conditions at home and abroad, with trips to Cerro Castillo, Chile; La Grave, France; the Antarctic Peninsula; Svalbard, Norway; Mount Foraker, Alaska; British Columbia, Canada, and the Wasatch Mountains in Utah.

The film features an array of characters from salty backcountry veterans to some of the top skiers and snowboarders, including Chris Davenport, Jake Sakson, Andrew McLean, Seth Wescott, Dylan Freed, Noah Howell, Matt Reardon, Drew Stoecklein, Forrest Coots, Ian Provo, Neil Provo, Chuck Mumford, Darrell Finlayson, Bob Athey, PY Leblanc, Jason Thompson,Todd Stuart and Hugo Harrison.

In the end, this is a feature-length ski film that celebrates exotic locations, wild adventures, and the dedicated personalities writing their own stories in snow.

Drummer and bandleader Jon Cohan formed the band in 2009 with some of his favorite local musicians to perform at Right Turn Live, a sober cafe in Arlington, MA. Cohan’s goal was simple: to introduce audiences to the great groove-based music he grew up listening to. Since its inception the band has grown into a nine-piece outfit. Boston rock stalwarts like Phil Kaplan of Men and Volts and Sal Baglio of The Stompers join dynamic singer Erica Rothenberg, guitarist Mike Pyle, bassist Jeff Keithline, percussionist Stephen Whitney, saxophonist Artie Camacho, and keyboardist Bob Camacho. The combined talents of the musicians brings a fresh and swinging interpretation to some of the finest examples of American music, including some tasty, rockin’ Holiday tunes for this special Regent concert.

The concert is preceded by a fascinating road to Woodstock documentary, directed by Grammy Award winner Bob Smeaton (Beatles Anthology, Band Of Gypsys, Festival Express), which reveals the struggle to stage the legendary festival and secure Hendrix as its headline artist. It includes footage and interviews with his band members such as Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, and Woodstock’s promoter Michael Lang.

This presentation features the original 16mm footage digitally restored together with a 5.1 audio surround mix by legendary engineer Eddie Kramer. Kramer originally recorded the Woodstock festival and also served Jimi Hendrix as his recording engineer throughout his entire career.

This show has been CANCELLED due to change in tour plans - please contact the box office at 617-646-4849 for refunds.

There is something very special about dance. A special magic to the human body moving well that we can all relate to. Add captivating music, glamour and pageantry and no wonder TV dance shows became such an overnight success.

The latest show from the Bellydance Superstars is the culmination of 10 years of touring the world – over 800 shows in 25 countries – pushing the boundaries of the art of bellydance to capture the artistry, magic and passion of this unique dance in all its variety.  So when looking for a name for the 2012-2013 show only one name seemed to sum up what it would be :  “THE MAGIC OF DANCE”

The Bellydance Superstars did not have the luxury of following in another’s footsteps; developing and improving on the work of others along a known course.  They were the first and only full time bellydance show touring the mainstream dance world.  As such they had a lot to prove, mindsets to change and educate as they defined and expanded on the understanding of what this dance art was.  They set a string of firsts; from national TV broadcasts of their shows in North America, Japan, China and elsewhere to performing top level shows in some of the most prestigious venues in the world; venues heretofore reserved for the likes of the ballet or super successful shows like Riverdance.  Their DVDs and CDs are the best known and distributed the world over – even officially released in China.

Above all the Bellydance Superstars are known for a great show – fast paced, lots of variety in music and dance styles, not afraid to fuse other dance arts from ballet to African into their repertoire; seeing bellydance as a big picture with a big future.  As in past shows, the vibrant and exciting music is matched only by the many beautiful costume changes for each number.  All in all when you have great dancers, great music, beautiful costumes, and a dedicated team on a mission to deliver, surprise and excite you will definitely achieve a Magic – that is what THE MAGIC OF DANCE is set to do.

On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues‐infused rock ’n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalogue including landmark tracks “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.”

Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band’s first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery. Now, for the first time, fans in over 40 territories worldwide will be able to get a front row seat to experience this historic event in glorious high definition and incredible surround sound. Experience it on the big screen for a strictly limited period only.

What Jimi Hendrix accomplished in the span of four short years before his death in 1970 at age 27 is nothing short of phenomenal. Now, more than four decades later, Hendrix is widely considered the greatest electric guitarist of all time. On Tuesday, November 13, Arlington Community Education and the Regent Theatre will co-host Hendrix at 70, a panel discussion of the life, music and legacy of this rock icon. The program will take place in the Arlington High School Media Center, 869 Massachusetts Avenue.

Panelists include Steve Morse, journalist and long-time Boston Globe music editor; Joel J. Brattin, Hendrix scholar and Professor of Humanities at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and Carter Alan, author and host of “Sunday Morning Blues” on WZLX/Boston. Leland Stein, Regent Theatre co-owner and lifelong Hendrix enthusiast, will moderate the panel discussion and the Q&A to follow.

The program will explore Hendrix’s legacy and his diverse – and, at times, surprising – influences, and the tremendous impact he has had on a wide swath of music and musicians that followed him. Panelists will highlight songs from his non-hit repertoire with a focus on his gentler side and more lyrical tunes – the hidden Hendrix beyond ”Purple Haze” and “Hey Joe” and the contemplative, humble man behind the flamboyant stage persona.

In the days following this event, the Regent Theatre will host several additional programs in celebration of Hendrix’s 70th birthday.

Thursday, November 15. Hendrix documentary film double-feature: “Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child” (2010), 7:15pm, and “Jimi Plays Berkeley” (2012), 9pm. Buy Tickets

Friday, November 16, 8pm. All Star Jam celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix hosted by the Thaddeus Hogarth Power Trio with Special Guests Tomo Fujita, Julien Kasper, Marty Walsh, and Neil Itzler. Buy Tickets

The Doors Live At The Bowl ’68 is widely held as the band’s best performance ever captured on film. Now for the first time fans can watch the complete version in digitally re–mastered glory as the entire concert has been carefully restored from the original camera negatives to include the lost performances of Hello I Love You, Texas Radio and the Big Beat and Spanish Caravan. The film opens with a special feature of interviews with the band talking about what it meant to perform at the Hollywood Bowl and the enduring significance of this concert. More than 40 years after their debut album, The Doors’ music and legacy are more influential than ever before. Though they’ve had scores of imitators, there’s never been another band quite like them and this film will appeal to their many fans – both their original followers and a younger generation discovering The Doors now.

“His humble sense of humility is what makes Trapper’s songs so strong… He makes you feel like you are the person he’s singing about.  The Few & the Far Between is another strong addition to the Chris Trapper/Push Stars catalog.”  Popdose

CHRIS TRAPPER began his career as the front man for late-90’s alternative rock band THE PUSH STARS (Capitol Records).  With four CD releases and several high profile national tours—including a run with Matchbox Twenty—The Push Stars served to establish Chris as an authentic talent.

As a modern day singer /songwriter, Chris is most known for his song This Time, the #1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers /Warner Bros Pictures).

The newest CD (released October 2011), The Few & The Far Between, is a collection of 14 songs written and performed by Chris Trapper.  This new work was Produced, Recorded and Mixed by Dan McLoughlin (The Push Stars, Mike Peters, Juliana Hatfield) at the Vault Recording Studio, Hoboken, NJ.

Focus tracks include the CD opener, Here All Along, featuring guest vocals by Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, The More I Think featuring vocals and slide guitar by Colin Hay of Men at Work and Ghost In Your Arms featuring backing vocals from Boston’s own Kristen Cifelli.

The New York Times calls his work “classic pop perfection.”

A prolific songwriter, Chris can boast high profile film placements including There’s Something About Mary (Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz), The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep), Say It Isn’t So (Heather Graham) and Gun Shy (Sandra Bullock, Liam Neeson) as well as significant television placements including All My Children, Women’s Murder Club, Malcolm In The Middle, a coveted placement in George Clooney’s final episode of ER, the theme song for WB Networks dramedy Pepper Dennis and a cameo on-screen appearance with the show’s star, Rebecca Romjin.

Chris Trapper’s music can best be described as lyrically driven roots-pop with a knack for telling everyday stories filled with extra-ordinary characters.

A respected songwriter of the highest caliber, Chris has written 7 songs with/for Canadian band GREAT BIG SEA, including their #1 single “Sea Of No Cares” from the certified-platinum Sea Of No Cares CD.  Great Big Sea covered Trapper’s song “Everything Shines” and their version served as the debut single off their certified-gold Road Rage CD album. Chris’ songwriting collaborations with Great Big Sea earned him two prestigious SOCAN awards. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and Antigone Rising have performed other notable versions of Trapper’s songs.

Chris Trapper’s ability to craft songs that are both elegant and accessible is evident on each solo CD in his deep Discography. There is a smart, honest quality to the lyrics that never panders.

Trapper’s live show is a favorite among fans of alt–acoustic music. His on–stage persona is warm and inclusive, his organic understanding of classic pop melody infectious. Audience members seem to particularly appreciate the lighthearted moments with the ukulele. They depart the venue at the end of the evening with the sense of having been truly entertained.

“It’s an incredibly rare musician, particularly in the world of popular music, who is able to forge a career based on quiet dignity and steadfast integrity.”

OPENER:
A Fragile Tomorrow has become one of the most respected band of brothers on the road, largely thanks to their venerable work ethic, stellar musicianship, and fans in high places. The four-piece powerpop band is comprised of identical brothers Sean and Dominic Kelly, their younger brother Brendan, and Shaun Rhoades. The band will release their fourth CD “Be Nice Be Careful,” in January.  The new disc was recorded with music legend Mitch Easter as producer and Ted Comerford as co-producer. Known for his work with bands like R.E.M. and Pavement, Easter brought his trademark jangle-pop sound to the band’s compositions.

In 1965 Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones svengali, asked filmmaker Peter Whitehead (The Fall, Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London) to accompany them on a quick tour of Ireland. Whitehead was astonished. Not only by the incredible power of the Stones’ performances but especially by the raw energy of the crowds of young people that rushed them everywhere. This new version of this behind-the scenes diary of the early Stones has never been seen; Mick Gochanour and Robin Klein, the team that brought The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus to the screen, have painstakingly restored over 90,000 frames of optical screen prints and negative, going back to the original sound tapes and 3-track live recordings. Included are electrifying performances of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “The Last Time,” and “Time is on My Side.” Charlie Is My Darling is an invaluable document, the unseen story of the band becoming the legend.

In addition the feature, the film includes an introduction with Kurt Loder, a filmmaker interview with Dave Grohl and Andrew Loog Oldham, a bonus feature on the restoration of the film, and interviews with the band members.

Compass International Pictures, Trancas International Films, and Screenvision turn back the clock to October 1978 in the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois for John Carpenter’s immortal classic, Halloween. On October 30th & 31st, the original genre-defining horror masterpiece graces the big screen once again. Some of the many themes addressed in this year’s 2nd annual Arlington International Film Festival are the skill of ‘story-telling’ as is taught and practiced in Marrakech, the historical journey of Indian sarodist, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan and his legendary music, an African-American’s journey from the segregated south to national recognition told through his carving, tooling and dyeing of pictures on leather, non-violence practiced by a little-known movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, an intimate spiritual interaction among a trio of human beings during the Holocaust… caught up in a moment of history told through performances of lieders by Schubert, Schumann and Wolf, autism and the struggle of a family to survive it’s demands, and what about the reality of reaching middle age in 2012 and not having found a partner; can we embrace this and celebrate life as it is and still feel whole?  In addition to film screenings there will be Q & A’s with filmmakers/main characters, panel discussions, special live performances and more.

The Arlington International Film Festival is much more than just a film festival; it is a celebration of cultures as well as being a platform for recognizing the common global human experience.  Please come and share these experiences with us.

MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE is an extraordinary story about finding hope, joy and music behind bars. Rita Chiarelli, Canada’s Queen of the Blues, takes a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the Blues: Louisiana State Maximum Security Penitentiary, a.k.a Angola Prison – formerly the bloodiest prison in America.  Rita’s trip turns into an historic jailhouse performance, playing with – rather than for – inmates serving life sentences. Their shared bond of music, and Chiarelli’s ebullient personality, draw striking revelations from the inmates. Rather than sensational stories of convicts, we witness remarkable voices of hope as their love of music radiates humanity and redemption on their quest for forgiveness. Official Film Web Site:
