Karla Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer/songwriters of her generation. That description is not hyperbole. Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim, commercial success, enduring popularity, and the unwavering respect of her peers. She has seen her songs become hits for Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd, and Linda Ronstadt. Many of Bonoff’s ballads are classics. Karla has continued to record and tour extensively, playing sold-out shows around the world; hearing her moving vocals on rich, expressive songs is like standing beneath a sparkling waterfall–refreshing, exhilarating, and restorative. Experiencing them live can be transformative. Fans and critics agree that Karla Bonoff’s songs are timeless as are her recordings. Many prefer her versions, live with instrumentation that is clean and spare, giving Bonoff’s voice room to work its emotional magic.

Curated and sequenced by Sakamoto himself, the twenty pieces featured in the film wordlessly narrate his life through his wide-ranging oeuvre. The selection spans his entire career, from his pop-star period with Yellow Magic Orchestra and his magnificent scores for filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to his meditative final album,12. Intimately filmed in a space he knew well and surrounded by his most trusted collaborators, including director Neo Sora, his son, Sakamoto bares his soul through his exquisitely haunting melodies, knowing this was the last time he would be able to present his art.

Join us on April 13th of 2024 at…
Arlington’s Showplace of Entertainment
...for No Static’s highly awaited return!

No Static may be the top Steely Dan tribute band in the country.
Comprised of 10 accomplished musicians from around the Greater Boston area they specialize in expertly performing the music by re-creating the bluesy jazz-rock sound created by band-leaders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker decades ago. Dan-Fans know, that the music spans genres and is both complex and very precise, with time and key changes popping up where sometimes least expected. Being both vocally and musically challenging, Steely Dan is not an easy songbook to play well. No Static has been doing it for over 15 years now and their sold-out shows tell the tale of their great success. Over time young and old Steely Dan lovers have discovered and enjoyed the passion and precision that No Static brings to all of their performances. Appearing at a variety of venues both public and private, this talented band has earned the admiration and affection of critics and fans alike; and over the many years they have been honored to share the stage with original Steely Dan band members. Both Walt Weiskopf (saxophonist) and Jon Herington (Music Director/guitarist) have performed as guests at their shows.

“The Arc of Oblivion”

Boston Film Premiere PLUS panel discussion w/ Q&A of expert archvists!

...illuminating the world of archives, record-keeping, and memory as part of a filmmaker's quixotic quest to build an ark in Maine.

Wednesday, April 3rd - 7:30pm

Bookmark and Share

What can be saved in a universe that erases its tracks? From executive producer Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams; Grizzly Man) and director Ian Cheney (King Corn), the film is an unexpectedly playful search for an answer to a deeply existential question. Set against the backdrop of the filmmaker’s quixotic quest to build an ark in a field in Maine, the film heads far afield — to salt mines in the Alps, fjords in the Arctic, and ancient libraries in the Sahara — to illuminate the strange world of archives, record-keeping, and memory.

Get ready to embark on a educational journey with this cutting-edge documentary that delves into the heart of the psychedelic healthcare movement from a Black community’s perspective. You’ll be invited to venture into the hidden realms of the psychedelic experience as you witness the Black community’s untold stories, struggles, and triumphs within this transformative movement. From underground rituals to actual practices, “A Table of Our Own” is an eye-opening exploration of the psychedelic world that you’ve probably never seen or been aware of before.

This screening event is for everyone who seeks to understand the power of psycho-active substances and their potential to shape our common future. We have challenged existing narratives and this film provides an inclusive space for dialogue in understanding and weaving together the diverse voices of the psychedelic community. With unapologetic honesty and fearless exploration, A Table of Our Own ignites a powerful conversation about race, identity, spirituality, and the profound impact of psychedelics on the individual and society at large. It’s a raw and unfiltered look into the lives of those who have been marginalized, pushing the boundaries and demanding change. This is more than just a documentary; it’s a call to action. Join us on this electrifying ride of self-discovery and social transformation as we dare to reimagine our relationship with these mind-expanding substances and create a world where healing and understanding know no bounds.

A Quick Synopsis of Rock n’ Roll Outlaw

Myles Connor was perhaps Boston’s first rock star. He performed with the likes of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, and many others. He was one of the first rockers in New England to land a record deal. His concerts featured wild theatrics; such as riding a motorcycle up onto the stage, and popping out of a closed casket to begin a set. Eventually though, he became one of America’s most notorious criminals masterminding over thirty (30) museum heists while maintaining a career as a popular on-stage entertainer. Myles even broke out of prison and was involved in a gun battle on the roofs of Boston’s Back Bay during which he was shot 4 times. Myles will be in-theatre, you’ll find that the man himself is more interesting than the legend he carved!

About… “The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary

Are you ready to experience what Lou Mansdorf at Rum Bar Records likes to call “Garage Rock 101”? See this intimate glimpse into the early 80s Boston music scene. The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary shares the untold story of the band that unwittingly pioneered and became emblematic of the genre. This documentary is a four-year effort by family and friends, crafted as a tribute to the band’s late co-founder and bassist Paul O’Halloran. It takes you back to the origins of The Dogmatics, recorded on long-forgotten 8mm film reels, giving you a glimpse into the dilapidated loft on Boston’s rundown South End, where the band lived along with many other talented musicians.

More about… “The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary”

The quartet was no different than any other talentless, self-deprecating, beer-swilling, girl-chasing lunkheads with guitars. It wasn’t about money. Catching a girl’s eye, a free round of drinks, or simply completing a song in unison were their rewards. But somehow, success would discover them as they created music that everyone could agree on. As their songs appealed to many audiences, they became known to many as “Boston’s House Band.” It’s not just a story of brothers – by blood and bond – but a rock and roll quartet that included identical twins with a shared passion for music and its rich history.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The Job of Songs was born of a feeling. When I traveled to Ireland for the first time, chasing my ancestral roots, I stepped into a session in Doolin, County Clare and the feeling overwhelmed me. I could not describe it in words, yet there was something so important and gripping in those moments spent in the pub. The community. The history. The music. It did not leave me. I wanted to capture this feeling the best way I know how – and so this film came into being.

We spent time in County Clare getting to know the musicians and music lovers of the area, hearing stories and forging relationships. We were so fortunate to earn people’s trust and time and spent four weeks exchanging stories and tunes with the vibrant community. My grandmother says that the Irish keep everything inside, never burst, and then die. That’s how it was when she was being raised by Irish immigrants in Chicago, and that’s how it was when her parents were being raised in Kerry, Ireland: just don’t say anything. And so, music is a way for us to unleash our feelings so that we may express the unspoken. Luka Bloom says, “The job of songs can sometimes be to entertain, but it’s this thing of giving people who don’t have songs permission to feel things that are really deeply ingrained in them – that they don’t necessarily intellectually understand.” Music grants us this freedom in ways that benefit not only ourselves but also those in our communities. It is creation, not destruction. I’d like to describe the feeling that led me here, but as is the nature of the beast, words do not capture, so I present to you The Job of Songs.

About the Movie

Who Can See Forever is the first ever in-depth look into the life and music of Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam. Initially conceived as a live documentary, Who Can See Forever grew into a deeper study of its enigmatic subject as director Josh Sliffe spent more and more time on the road. Shot over the course of three years and using the traditional concert film as his jumping-off point, Sliffe dug into the myth and ethos of Iron & Wine through a series of interviews and unguarded, behind-the-scenes footage that welcome the viewer into the center of Beam’s universe.

The film broke ground during a particularly creative period wherein Iron & Wine released back-to-back Grammy-nominated records and were in the midst of a three-year touring cycle. The concert film is drawn from a two night-stand at the historic Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina and features bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple, Soul Coughing), drummer Elizabeth Goodfellow (Allison Russell, Better Oblivion Community Center), cellist Teddy Rankin-Parker and keyboardist Eliza Hardy-Jones (War on Drugs, Grace Potter). The shows were performed in-the-round for a once in a lifetime experience and the live performances pull from the entirety of Iron & Wine’s 20 plus year career.

Jim Kweskin is the founder of the legendary 1960s Jim Kweskin Jug Band with Fritz Richmond, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, Mel Lyman, and Bruno Wolfe. During the five years they were together, they successfully transformed the sounds of Pre-World War II rural music into a springboard for their good-humored performances. Their imitators were legion, including a San Francisco jug band that became the Grateful Dead, a Los Angeles jug band that became the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and a New York jug band that became the Lovin’ Spoonful. No other group attained their unique blend of youthful energy and antiquarian expertise, tight musicianship, loose camaraderie, and infectious swing.

For Three LIVE Shows Only!

The Arlington Catholic Drama Club will feature the full variety of theatrical techniques, comedy, and song available to them for this TWO-ACT PERFORMANCE that promises to engage an audience of all ages! Boasting a score with chart-topping songs, GODSPELL is a sensation that continues to touch audiences. The song “Day by Day” became an international hit in the early 1970s and the album won two Grammy Awards.  The plot is pretty simple as a small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling applications and hefty doses of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage conveying messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life. One of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time, Godspell opened May 17, 1971 Off-Broadway and transferred to Broadway in 1976. It ran for 2,615 combined performances off and on Broadway over that timeframe!

ABOUT THE MOVIE…

Every holiday season, countless millions from all over the world gather around television screens to watch their favorite Christmas movies. It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol (in all its many versions), A Christmas Story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and of course, The Polar Express, are all universally beloved holiday movies. But no list of classic Christmas movies could ever be complete without including White Christmas with it’s all star cast!

As the premiere Paramount Studios moving picture of the year, White Christmas was the first-ever film recorded and screened on the wide-screen as the ‘wonder-tech’ called VistaVision and was released 68 years ago on October 14, 1954. It premiered at New York’s, Radio City Music Hall. Variety magazine gave the film a thumbs up, saying: White Christmas should be a natural hit at the box office….” White Christmas proved to be a financial success while earning over $12 million dollars at the box office. In fact, White Christmas was the biggest movie hit of the year! See it now on the Big Screen accompanied by the Regent Theatre’s full-concert sound system!

A Quick Synopsis…

In 2014, Trevor Kennison’s life was forever altered by a broken back - for worse and for better, in equal measures. Barry Corbet, an intrepid skier, mountaineer, explorer, filmmaker, and Jackson Hole legend, broke his back in a helicopter crash in 1968. Frustrated by a pre-ADA culture that did not accept or support the disabled, Barry reinvented himself, becoming a seminal leader in the disability community.
FULL CIRCLE follows Trevor on a path towards post-traumatic growth in parallel with Barry, 50 years later. Their stories mirror each other, connected through time and space by common locations and motifs; injuries in the Colorado backcountry, rehab at Craig Hospital, fame in Jackson Hole; but also, through their shared resiliency and refusal to let their passion for life be limited by their injuries.
FULL CIRCLE is an unblinking examination of the challenges of Spinal Cord Injury, and a celebration of the growth that such tragedy can catalyze.

About the film…

This film is a window into the lives of my musical brothers, whose gold standard is to make sure that every song they play on comes out even better than the songwriter imagined. Now they’re doing that for their own songs, and this film tells their story beautifully.- Carole King

A wonderful and fascinating encomium to the unsung heroes of the music of the 70s and so much more. I was thrilled to watch my favourite musicians (and dearest friends) celebrated for their musical brilliance, their prodigious influence and creativity - and for how much fun we all had (and, by the way, continue to have!)”. - Peter Asher

Waddy and I sometimes, I think we’re the same person, except from California and New York, because we are like two sides of a coin and that’s why we have been working together for so long I think. Because I would never want anybody else to be my musical director, or my lead guitarist, because Waddy makes me feel safe and always has in any situation, no matter how frightening the situation, as long as he’s standing next to me, I know I’m safe.- Stevie Nicks

One of the things about the comradery was the knowledge of what it’s like to make music together and to collaborate. on something like that. Like put down a tune and everybody work together as a sort of team or a community on this tune. It’s a bond, it’s such a special thing to be able to do. “The creative input of these session guys cannot be overstated. It can’t be overstated. I mean it just can’t be overstated. -James Taylor

Synopsis

Famed MPB (música popular brasileira) singer Elis Regina was a decade into her tenure with Philips Records when she was given the ultimate anniversary gift in 1974: a collaborative album with her icon, singer-songwriter Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim. Over 16 days in Los Angeles, the two recorded the classic Bossa Nova album “Elis & Tom,” and now footage of those recording sessions has been restored for the world to see. Featuring never-before-seen archival material and interviews with the musicians featured on the record, Roberto de Oliveira’s and Jom Tob Azulay’s documentary is a music lover’s dream come true.

A Quick Synopsis…

After three of the most dynamic and successful U.S. charities were shut down by charity watchdogs, destroying lives and cutting off precious resources, many of the top influencers in the field knew something had to be done to overhaul the nonprofit sector. Led by Dan Pallotta, whose record-breaking Ted Talk on the subject has inspired top philanthropists and change-makers, this feature documentary exposes the dark side of philanthropy and introduces a radical new way of giving. In an emotional call to action, UnCharitable demands that charities be freed from the traditional sackcloth-and-ashes constraints, so that they can truly change the world. No topic is more crucial and timely as we emerge from the Coronavirus pandemic with the revelation that we are all interconnected and that our fate lies in how much we are willing to invest in positive change.

Advice for Girls puts a spotlight on the collective experience of women in the ski industry. The film showcases advice from three generations of women in skiing. Each generation reminds women and girls of all ages that they are worthy of success, allowed to take up space, and are extremely valuable to the ski industry. With an intersectional cast featuring all types of women – women of color, queer women, women with disabilities, and more – the crew hopes that everyone can find someone in the film to connect to.

“My hope is that the film will help girls skip over some of the limiting beliefs
imposed upon past generations of skiers and inspire them to show up
as their truest selves,” says producer and athlete Addy Jacobsend.

Featuring an all-female cast and crew, Advice for Girls is a
MUST-SEE SKI FILM for any skiing enthusiast.

About the film…

The Stones & Brian Jones is the latest documentary from sometimes controversial director Nick Broomfield, who made Kurt & Courtney, Biggie & Tupac, Whitney: Can I Be Me, and more. It’s out in theaters for one night only on November 7th before hitting digital platforms later in the year.
The film explores the life of Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones, his rivalry with Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, and his ousting from the band and untimely death in 1969 at age 27. Featuring revealing interviews with all the main players and unseen archive released for the first time, the film explores the creative musical genius of Jones, key to the success of the band, and uncovers how the founder of what became the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world was left behind in the shadows of history.

The colorful cast of characters includes Ben E. King, Lou Reed, Dr. John, Phil Spector, Dion DiMucci, Shawn Colvin, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
If you love stories about the music business you’ll certainly be entertained, but AKA Doc Pomus is intrinsically compelling because it charts the life of such a singular man. He was definitely one of a kind.

Jerome Solon Felder was the most unlikely of rock & roll icons. Paralyzed with polio as a child, Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder reinvented himself first as a blues singer, renaming himself Doc Pomus, then emerged as a one of the most brilliant songwriters of the early rock and roll era, writing “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “This Magic Moment,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and dozens of other hits.

For most of his life he was confined to crutches and a wheelchair, but he lived more during his sixty-five years than others could experience in several lifetimes. A.K.A. DOC POMUS brings to life Dhis joyous, romantic, heartbreaking, and extraordinarily eventful journey.

In his later years, he was a mentor to generations of younger songwriters, and a fierce advocate for downtrodden rhythm and blues musicians. He wrote a thousand songs – including some of the most recorded songs in the history of popular music – but his most lasting gift may have been his uniquely generous spirit.  “If the music industry had a heart,” the record producer Jerry Wexler remembered, “it would be Doc Pomus.” Packed with incomparable music and rare archival imagery, A.K.A. DOC POMUS features interviews with hus collaborators and friends, including Dr. John, Ben E. King, Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, Dion, Leiber and Stoller, and B.B. King. Passages from Doc’s private journals are read by his close friend, Lou Reed. Doc Pomus’ gripping life story makes for a powerful and lively film that introduces this unique American character to a new, much wider circle of admirers.

About Mai Cramer…

In 1978 Mai Cramer moved to Boston, joined WGBH Radio and created Blues After Hours. Mai Cramer made things happen. Cramer’s wide-ranging musical appetite — from Acoustic Blues to Jump Blues, Urban Blues and some R&B, with a little Delta Blues and a lot of South Side Chicago Blues mixed in — won her millions of ardent fans. Cambridge-based blues performer Annie Raines once said of Cramer, “Mai was a reliable and constant warm presence on the air. If you needed your blues fix, that’s where you could get it on the radio.Mai usually leaned toward artists on the Chess or Alligator labels. So her twice-weekly listeners would practically be guaranteed to hear Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Luther Allison, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Magic Slim and other legends. The always upbeat Cramer brought a great sense of humor and an encyclopedic knowledge of the blues to the WGBH Radio airwaves until her passing in 2002. We will remember her well…don’t miss this, the “...blues event of the year!

About Houston Bernard…

Houston Bernard’s country roots run deep with a family tree that includes songwriters, touring musicians and an outlaw gunfighter nicknamed “Bitter Creek” who The Eagles recorded a song about on Desperado. Born in Oklahoma, raised in Alaska, he’s also an Army veteran who has now comfortably settled into life as a professional and popular independent country music recording artist, touring throughout the United States. With musical inspirations that range from Bruce Springsteen to Dolly Parton, Houston draws upon his family’s rich country and rockabilly musical roots by bringing upbeat and relatable music with powerhouse vocals.

Synopsis

Surrounded by wheat fields, cowboys, and cars, four bespectacled misfits in KansasBill Goffrier, Brent Giessmann, John Nichols, and Ron Klaus — grabbed instruments and blasted out “...a ravenous strain of rock ‘n’ roll” as tuneful, brainy, and enthralling as anything coming from the coasts. They worshipped the Stooges and witnessed the Sex Pistols bring punk to the Great Plains, igniting within them an uncontrolled prairie fire to do-it-themselves. As the Embarrassment, they threw a house-wrecking party and invited “ ...a thousand loving friends…” into their secret world of “...weirdo new wave freaks” in Wichita and beyond. They played Chicago, D.C., and New York, drawing the attention of influential figures like Allen Ginsberg, John Cale, and Jonathan Demme — but their independence and refusal to sell out sparked tension within the group and kept mainstream success at bay. Through original interviews, restored concert footage, and appearances by fans including Evan Dando, Freedy Johnston, Grant Hart, and Thomas Frank, this documentary shows how the Embarrassment rose out of nowhere to become a post-punk legend that’s almost been forgotten — until now.

About…Kozak System

Charismatic, sincere, and like no other - “Kozak System” is a band that has become a unique phenomenon on the Ukrainian music scene. Performing impressively at both large festivals and before intimate club audiences, their tour has covered all of the Ukraine. The diversity of the group’s repertoire is impressive - they are not limited by stylistic or genre frameworks. Each song has powerful lyrics and an explosive sound of all instruments.
In September Kozak System kicked-off its North American tour to support Ukrainian people in their fight for independence and now concludes the tour with a final stop in Greater Boston at Arlington’s Showplace.
Don’t miss the chance to experience the most dynamic and authentic Ukrainian music performed live, full of energy and bursting with its true cultural identity!
