Sree Ramadasu Saturday, May 27th 6:45 PM Annamayya (1997) a land mark film in the History of Telugu Cinema in the recent times. Directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, Annamayya played by Nagarjuna, can be found in many personal DVD libraries. Its one of the few Telugu movies got this kind of a previlege. Now nearly a decade after Annamayya, Director K. Raghavendra Rao is set to bring to celluloid another epic tale, that of Bhakta Ramadas, whose mellifluous keertans secured a place in every Telugu House hold over several decades. Once again Nagarjuna plays a role of historical, religious and spiritual importance. One thing that one can be sure about Sree Ramadasu is that it is not run of the mill. Those who had seen Annamaya from the same team almost a decade back had been waiting for such a film. But films like this are not made everyday. It takes an inspirational spark to come up with such movies. That spark for Sree Ramadasu has apparently come from the duo of J K Bharavi (writer) and M M Keeravani (music director). In fact Keeravani came up with this idea for the film on a trip to the Bhadrachalam temple last year. As everyone knows Keeravani is reckoned to be the ‘hero’ of the film. One fortunate thing is that music composer Keeravani is a knowledgeable person and his score would stuck to the popular idiom. He was also conscious of the quality of these songs that were on the lips of the devotees of Srirama. His compositions (19) are already a huge hit. The audio released uniquely at the Bhadrachalam temple itself has gone down well with the purists. He has put in painstaking efforts to get the fervor and feel right. Writer Bharavi who won plaudits from everyone for his meticulous research of Annamayya has once again done monumental research about this balladeer saint and wrote a magnificent script. By all reckoning, the writer and music director are sitting on another winner. The story is etched in local history and Indian heritage. Now they are making a film out of it. It takes extreme guts for a popular star to go for an image change and attempt something like this. But Nagarjuna has made bold to take up the challenge. He has a hirsute look and has prepared himself assiduously for the character. For Nagarjuna and K Raghavendra Rao it may be history once again. After the splendid show of Annamaya, the duo is back for yet another musical biopic. This film is for all the generations alike, in fact even more so for the entire families. Because general entertainment films come every now and then but this is once in a very long time, and this time it’s happening nearly after a decade.
