Community Youth Orchestra
CYO is an orchestra comprised of highly motivated young musicians chosen by audition from Arlington and its surrounding communities. The string orchestra, founded in September 2003, consists of ambitious middle and high school students who rehearse weekly and perform advanced level repertoire of various styles. Towns represented in the orchestra are Belmont, Bedford, Billerica,Cambridge, Chelmsford,Concord, Lexington, Newton and Winchester. Works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Smetana, Rossini, Sarasate, Williams and Mancini will be featured, as well as an African spiritual performed with the Arlington Public Schools Elementary Select Chorus.

Bio
Debra Thoresen has been the Director of the Arlington Public Schools' Elementary and Middle School String Instrumental Music Program since 1998. Two orchestras under her direction have been chosen to perform at the Massachusetts Music Educator's All-State Conference as models of exemplary public school orchestras. Ms. Thoresen also directs the Mount Alvernia High School Chamber Ensemble in Newton, MA and teaches private violin and piano. In addition to CYO, January 2004 will mark the beginning of the CYPO, the Community Youth Preparatory Orchestra. This orchestra will give slightly younger students in grades 4-6 an opportunity to learn and perform various styles of quality repertoire at a modified level.
