"Rhythm at the Regent" featuring Barbara Duffy and Company’s “Stages" Saturday, October 27 at 8pm $32 Preferred Seating; $28 Reserved; $24 Students/Seniors/Groups Dance Inn Productions, under the direction of Thelma Goldberg, teams up with tap dance artist Joshua Hilberman to present the debut Boston concert of the extraordinary Barbara Duffy and Company and its performance of “Stages.” The dancers will be accompanied by the swingingest ensemble working in tap today—musical director and pianist, Boston’s Don Hemwall, with local heavy Peter Tillotson on bass, and New York favorite Bernice “Boom Boom” Brooks on drums.Comprising New York City’s fleetest female feet, Barbara Duffy and Company showcases the power, sensitivity, and grace of tap with emotionally driven choreography that celebrates life through the universal power of rhythm. Stages was created not only as a vehicle to do what they do best, but also to find new forms of expression and ways to connect to a broader audience through tap dance. Song, dance, dialogue, choreography and improvisation are blended into an evening of high-energy entertainment leaving no doubt that women can "hit." Stages pays tribute to the masters who have shaped the art form while providing a unique perspective on its future. Hailed by the late Gregory Hines as “…one of the most inventive tappers around…” the virtuoso Duffy has thrilled audiences worldwide as dance partner to Hines, as a soloist, and as a founding member, featured dancer, and as dance captain of Brenda Bufalino’s trailblazing American Tap Dance Orchestra from 1986 to 1995. Duffy has also performed in and acted as assistant choreographer for several compositions by Savion Glover. Inspired by Hines to create a women’s tap group, Barbara Duffy founded her Company in 2000. Since then, the troupe has performed at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Studio 54, Dusseldorf’s prestigious home for contemporary dance, the Tanz Haus Theatre, the Jepson Theatre at the University of Richmond, and the Joyce Theatre. Regularly featured at Tap City, the NYC tap festival--and in the nationwide Tap City on Tour-- they “brought down the house with their musical sensitivity” (Star Ledger, NJ). Her television appearances include “The Gregory Hines Show,” ABC’s 1997 “Gala for the President” (Ford Theater, Washington D. C.) where she performed with Hines before President and Mrs. Clinton, "Sesame Street" (PBS) with Savion Glover, Jimmy Slyde and Buster Brown, and "Great Performances - Tap Dance in America" (PBS) with Brenda Bufalino’s American Tap Dance Orchestra.
