On Sunday, May 6th, at 7:30 p.m., the Regent Theatre in Arlington will bring back “African Rhythms,” a show of West African dance and music.  The performance is a fundraiser for the “Build a School in Africa Project,” a non-profit organization which is collaborating with Save the Children to build badly needed middle schools in southern Mali, West Africa.  The first school was completed in the remote village of Dialakoroba in early 2006; a second middle school was recently finished in January of 2007 in Massamagana.

The partnership with Save the Children has enabled the project to make the most efficient use of its fund-raising dollars, since that organization already has an effective school construction program.  Fundraising is now under way for a third school, with a goal of raising about $10,000, nearly half the cost of constructing a block of three classrooms.

“African Rhythms” features the fabulous Malian drummers from Troupe Baden’ya and the Teriya Dancers, who are being joined by the dancers and drummers of Troupe Teranga. and a repertory group directed by Fatou-Carol Sylla. Drummers and dancers will perform dances from Mali, Senegal, and Guinea; the dances are representative of different ethnic groups and a variety of celebrations. The show will begin with a beautiful photo journal of Mali 2002, and the program includes a showing of brief photo documentaries of the school building projects already  completed. There will also be vendor tables selling a variety of crafts.  100% of the proceeds from the show will go to the school project, and all contributions are tax-deductible.

.  This high-energy show has always received rave reviews from the audience, and we invite you to share this dynamic experience with us.  It’s a show the whole family can enjoy. Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $12 for students and seniors (prices include $1.50 Theater Restoration Fee.)  The Regent Theatre is located in Arlington Center at 7 Medford St., just off  Mass. Ave. around the corner from Starbuck’s. Free parking is available – follow the “Parking” sign opposite the theater entrance.
