As the Boston Herald put it, “Guy Mendilow has had his passport stamped so many times even Kofi Annan could relate.” A citizen of Israel, Great Britain and the U.S., Mendilow spent much of his life playing hopscotch between continents, and Guy’s music transports audiences to lands and times, some distant, some near. His exuberant participatory songs spin tales of family and adventure and introduce such characters as magical fiddlers, talking animals and sirens that bewitch sailors in the sea. Guy accompanies his singing with his customized berimbau, a homemade musical bow and arrow, struck with a stick and a stone. He also plays guitar and percussion and is a masterful overtone singer, singing two or more notes at the same time in a technique that Northeast Performer Magazine calls “hauntingly beautiful.” Andy Bergman joins Guy onstage with his saxes, flutes, clarinet, electric mbira—a modified thumb piano—and his one-of-a-kind percussive jaw harp playing.
