One of the most enduringly popular American bands, Hot
Tuna, has been performing and recording since the mid-1960s. Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame inductees Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady formed the
precursor to Hot Tuna while they were still in high school and founded
the first incarnation of the band while they were both founding members
of Jefferson Airplane. Tuna has recorded 19 albums and CDs in addition
to Jack and Jorma's solo albums and their appearances together on
numerous other albums and CDs. In recent years, they've welcomed the
virtuoso mandolin, tenor banjo, and tenor guitar of the legendary Barry
Mitterhoff, proving that after four decades Hot Tuna just gets better.
Following an acoustic set, Jorma, Jack, and Barry are joined by the
brilliant young percussionist Erik Diaz for an electric set that brings
an uptown air to what is the unmistakable Hot Tuna sound.
Jorma chats about the development of this tour’s show: "As we listen to the old material culling pieces out for performance we find that we are walking in a deep, rich mine. The earliest incarnations of Hot Tuna were me playing acoustic guitar and Jack playing electric bass. Over the years we explored a number of different paths, from pure acoustic to the most electric of shows. Acoustic… electric… what’s in a name? It has always been about treatment of the music. This fall we’re joined by our friend Barry Mitterhoff, one of the world’s great living mandolin players who will play a number of instruments in addition to his mandolin, and Erik Diaz, a great drummer and percussionist who quite simply, can play any music placed in front of him and do it with soul. It’s going to be a good fall!"
