Flying in the
face of the classical music training he received as a child – as
well as the advice of his teachers and parents – Mike Smith
became a rock and roll singer at the age of 17. Playing in the pubs
and clubs of the Tottenham area of his native London, Smith met four
other young musicians who shared his musical preferences. It wasn’t
long before group leader, Dave Clark, recruited Mike as lead vocalist
and keyboard player – the Dave Clark Five was on its way to
a date with destiny.
From 1964-1971,
Mike’s distinctive voice dominated the international airwaves
as the DC5 accumulated 30 global hit singles, most written by Smith & Clark,
including “Glad All Over” and “Bits & Pieces”.
The groups’ phenomenal success continued during their reign
at the top of the charts. The Dave Clark Five sold more than 100
million records, performed to standing-room-only crowds during five
consecutive world tours, and made a record-setting 18 appearances
on CBS TVs “The Ed Sullivan Show”, Americas most popular
television variety show of the period.
