Anthony Hosted by Laney Goodman, Sunday, March 21st, 2004, 7:30pm Vernal Equinox First Day of Spring Proceeds go to RESPOND INC. ODETTA ODETTA's latest album release, "LOOKIN' FOR A HOME" (a tribute to the music and life of Leadbelly), for M.C. Records, received two 2002 W.C. Handy Awards nominations (Best Traditional Blues album, and Best Female Blues Artist). AMAZON.COM rated it a Top 10 Blues Album of the Year, and New York Post's CD review, said: "Folk music's grandame, ODETTA, has unleashed her formidable vocal talents in a collection of music written by the late Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter. This album has history and soul, and is an instant classic." Odetta, is one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. Before Odetta, no solo woman performer (let alone an African American woman!) had toured the world singing folk, blues, Negro spirituals, jazz, work and protest songs, while telling the stories of America's southern experience. ERICA WHEELER Erica Wheeler has become known as one of the premier contemporary folk/alternative country artists on the touring circuit today. She has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered and was winner of the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Troubadour Contest. Her CD "The Harvest" charted for 5 months on Billboard's Gavin Americana Chart with 4 weeks in the top 10. A Signature Sounds recording artist, Erica has 4 highly acclaimed releases to her credit. Her latest release entitled "three wishes" was recorded in NYC in 1999. It was produced by Steven Miller of Cacophony Productions. The CD features a lush, stately sound enhanced by members of Bob Dylan's road band. A nationally touring artist for over a decade, Erica has become a favorite headliner at clubs, coffeehouses, colleges and festivals across the country. Erica has appeared with Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, Greg Brown and many others. www.ericawheeler.net LOUISE TAYLOR If awards were given out for smoldering sensuality in the world of female singer-songwriters, Louise Taylor would have a mantleful. Praised for combining poetic sophistication with a husky, powerful voice, a rare feel for the acoustic guitar, and a commanding stage presence, Taylor is an unbridled creative spirit who hits the sweet spot album after album. Her songs don't follow any set rules, but rather present themselves as individuals ... unique unto themselves and illuminated by contrasts.... contemporary and classic, gutsy and tender, mysterious and revealed. Dirty Linen praised, "When Louise Taylor reaches within herself to express a song, the world seemingly comes to a halt. Her music is inherently sincere, drawing on her life experience for sustenance and inspiration. Taylor seems to have mastered a unique, sensuous and deeply personal path with her music, songwriting and beautiful voice." www.louisetaylor.com FRANC GRAHAM On her second full-length album, Sugar Tree
(Take 'er Easy Records), Franc Graham's sound is reminiscent of one
of her inspirations and comrades
in the Boston music scene, Mark Sandman. Like songs by the Treat Her
Right and Morphine leader, Graham's songs are seductive and swampy, offering
up mystery and poetry, written around the lowest strings of her guitar,
and arranged around sultry, addictive grooves. Graham's music also takes
turns down roads paved by some of her other heroes: Neil Young, Lucinda
Williams, and Patti Smith. Like them, Graham is somewhat of a fringe
artist, musically carving her own space at the edge of popular culture.
When Graham opened for Lucinda Williams on her "Essence" tour,
Lucinda referred to herself as a "Franc Graham convert." www.francgraham.com
