Shot on a high contrast, black-and-white stock that suggests both "A Hard Day's Night," the lighthearted Beatles fantasy of pop stardom, and "Don't Look Back," D. A. Pennebaker's down-to-earth profile of Bob Dylan, "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" finds an effective middle course between fan club worshipfulness and the studied detachment of the professional journalist...."
