FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 06, 2004 Contact: Leland Stein
Mark your calendars for Arlington’s town-wide Spanish Fiesta Weekend on March 13 and 14. The events promise to provide families with a cornucopia of rich cultural experiences to warm up the last week of winter! First, a family-oriented Fiesta with exhibits, market, food, and school displays is planned for Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Town Hall. Then on Sunday, March 14 at 3 p.m., Rounder Records recording artists Sol y Canto will perform a family concert at the Regent Theater with the Andean band Sumaj Chasquis (both bands are based in this area and have performed at Arlington schools).Concert tickets will be available for $15 for adults; $10 for children and available at the Regent Theater box office (646-4849) and Crossroads Trade (646-3939) in Arlington Center. Arlington Spanish Network members will have the opportunity to purchase advance tickets for this reserved seating concert before they go on public sale; see www.arlingtonspanish.org for details on joining ASN and for more on the Fiesta Weekend. A Latin American movie night on Saturday at Robbins Library or the Capitol Theater is also in the works; and the library will have a special display on Spanish-language literature and film for children and adults for the week preceding and including the weekend. There will also be other information and resources available around town and on the ASN website. All events are open to the public and money raised will support the Arlington Public Schools' Spanish Fund, which provides funds for classroom supplies, teachers' professional development, and curriculum enrichment materials. The Arlington Spanish Network is working in partnership with the Arlington Public Schools to build this fund and to conduct curriculum enrichment activities. Planned activities include Latin American and Spanish music, dance, and puppet performances; door prizes; a Mercado (market) featuring crafts of Latin America; a Taste of Latin America food buffet; and a "passport," treasure hunt. Individual schools will sponsor country booths where elementary students will earn passport stamps. Students will receive passports and prepare for some of the Fiesta activities in their Spanish classes. Curriculum-related Spanish books, tapes, software, t-shirts and CDs will be for sale. Volunteers are needed to help plan and staff this event, particularly for the food and music events on Saturday; and financial contributions are also welcome. You may join the Network by visiting www.arlingtonspanish.org; or call Charlotte Pierce at 800-879-5693 to sign up to help with the Fiesta and the public schools' Spanish programs. The historic Regent Theatre, Arlington’s Show Place of Entertainment
since 1916, is currently presenting its second year of performances under
new ownership. Located at 7 Medford St. (just off Mass. Ave.) in Arlington
Center—a few miles from Cambridge and Boston—the theatre
is MBTA and wheelchair accessible with plenty of free parking across
the street. For tickets and more information call (781) 646-4TIX (4849) |
