January 31, 2003 Contact: Leland Stein ARLINGTON’S REGENT THEATRE TO DEBUT WEEKLY COMEDY SERIES
Get ready for all the laughs you can handle as Arlington’s Regent Theatre presents Riot at the Regent Friday nights at 8pm beginning February 14, 2003. The series will provide comedy fans a unique opportunity to hear and see a wide variety of national and local comedians on stage in a comfortable, smoke and alcohol-free setting.
Riot at the Regent kicks-off Valentine’s Day evening with a performance by comic-impressionist, Bob Gautreau, combining parodies with tributes in “Legendary Love Songs” backed by special guests, The Christa Dulude Quartet. Laughter and romance will abound, as Gautreau becomes Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Cher, Billie Holiday, and other celebrity vocalists. As a preview to the event, Gautreau will give an interview and perform live this Saturday, February 8 at 1pm on 88.9 FM, WERS’ “Standing Room Only” program.
A veteran of the Boston comedy scene who has appeared on HBO and A&E’s An Evening at the Improv, Gautreau—“The Man of a Thousand Voices”—returns the following Friday, February 21, for an evening of stand-up comedy and improvisation, together with new-vaudevillian, Dan Foley, as seen on WCVB-TV’s Chronicle, MTV, and TNN, and Cambridge native, Denise Richardson, with her risqué, multiple character routines. Then, on Friday, February 28, the series continues with a celebration of Black History Month featuring Jimmy Smith, one of Boston’s original comedians, recently seen on Comedy Central.
Riot at the Regent storms into March with a performance by Boston comedy legend, Tony V. on the 7th. Named “The Funniest Person in Massachusetts” by Showtime, Tony V. has performed on HBO, A&E, Comedy Central, and Late Night With Conan O’Brien, while appearing as a guest star on Seinfeld, The Single Guy, Boston Common, and other hit broadcast and cable TV shows. On March 14 at the Regent, “An Evening of Improvisational Comedy”, will feature Arlington natives, Bari Lee and Greg Rodriguez, along with Boston Comedy Festival finalist, Adam Pearlman.
In honor of Women’s History Month, the last two March events will showcase four extraordinary comediennes. March 21 features Julie Barr—widely acclaimed as one of Boston’s top comediennes—and Deb Armelino an actress, singer, comic, and impressionist from New York City. March 28 features Patti Ross—star of stage, screen and television—seen on Bless this House with Andrew Dice Clay, the Roseanne Show, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, together with the saucy Kelly MacFarland, who has appeared at the Boston Comedy Festival and the Marshall's Women in Comedy Showcase.
“We are thrilled to be adding regular comedy shows to our diverse mix of performances at the theatre,” says Regent owner, Gary Adelson. “A year ago, Jimmy Tingle sold-out 13 of 16 shows here, and we’ve been wanting to feature other talented comedians on the Regent stage ever since. We get constant requests from patrons to bring back comedy, and now with Riot at the Regent we intend to schedule it on an ongoing basis.”
The historic Regent Theatre, Arlington’s Show Place of Entertainment since 1916, is currently presenting its second full season of performances under new ownership. Located at 7 Medford St. (just off Mass. Ave.) in Arlington Center—a few short miles from Cambridge and Boston—the theatre is MBTA and wheelchair accessible with plenty of free parking across the street. Beginning February 14 through March, Riot at the Regent will be presented every Friday night at 8pm. Tickets are $20 for individuals or $30 per couple ($15 for individuals and $20 per couple for the Valentine’s Day “Legendary Love Songs” performance).
